For years, I've been looking for an alternative for Efiction. Looks like I finally found one. Though before I mention it. I do want to test it out before giving you a name. If it comes back with positive results. I'll let you in on this.
I got to say though that Efiction really went down the tubes. No support means lost visitors and people moving on.
Hi, I wasn't able to answer to you (wordpress forum tinymce dislikes me) in your last post.
I am curious what you find because except script running on python or ruby - there is no PHP alternative nowadays. I tried, believe me.
There is actually 3.5.6 version in development and testing process.

Hey Jimmi no worries.
I found this new script to work off of. There is so many options, but easier to manage at least for me. It's a wordpress alternative It's called Fictioneer. I don't know if you ever heard of it, but its mainly a wordpress site with a theme you import into it and it has tons of options.
This is their demo site. I've been using it for the last few days on my own server. But I currently have it on maintenance mode.
There's only 1 drawback that I've seen so far, there's nothing premade for you. You got to set all the options and pages. But it displays just as efiction does. You can use Akismet for Spam Protection and it can be an archive for just yourself or make it for everyone.
Hi,
thanks for the tip. I will try it - mainly out of curiosity. I probably missed it because it is WordPress. Yeah, I know most of the negative and positive points about using WordPress, but I can't get over the database mess it makes. But it looks like a great alternative for the new site.
For saving existing efiction sites there is 3.5.6 version available - it is tested now on live sites. More testers would be nice, I am fixing everything they find... It is marked as fixed for PHP 7.4, and locally tested for PHP 8.1.
I have a problem with this forum. If I hadn't notifications about your posts, I wouldn't find them. This forum is probably cached because of speed, I need to log in to see new posts... login box is hard to find... So new visitors think that here is no activity and no option to login in. And TinyMCE editor is not working on my developer comp, probably some conflict with my browser extension... See? It is WordPress... With their automatic updates too many things can go wrong way...
But it is nice to know that more people are trying to help save selfhosted archives.

I don't have any problems but yeah the login box is hidden on the forum and it is cached.
I think I tried your 3.5.6 but there was errors. I had a problem with it. It would not connect to the database. I have my old archive backed up. Until someone comes up with a solution I'll wait till there is an official version. i do like efiction, but until there's a fix I guess I will have to wait.
But you haven't offered any database to test. Neither reported some issues. To fix any software without real data is almost impossible... Somebody is helping now, so 3.5.6 is still updated and fixed more and more.
Yeah, I wish that there was an official release too as it was promised - promised a team of skilled developers working on it, etc... but for now, they weren't able to fix already reported issues. I am at least trying because if everybody gives up, then there will be nobody left to use the "new version". With PHP changes - it is already late.

@jimmi yeah I haven't really got much errors on it. It works a lot smoother than efiction. This is efiction: https://fiction.simplyjamesmcavoy.com/ I am constantly getting this error. I even tried to do a new install and it gave me the black screen of death with 3.5.5
It was working on my old hosting but with this i haven't got it to work.

3.5.5 will not work with PHP 8, there are issues with PHP 7.4 too. If you want to fix it by me, just let me know. I need FTP, database access, and an admin account.
And you need to have display errors on your server OFF...
That WP solution looks good. I will test it more. I have already data in a similar structure, I just changed the names of custom post types and fields and it worked. I wish it was a plugin, not a theme but it is the solution. Or for me - at least a source for learning some things (Inspiration). I can imagine this for the new site with new authors... otherwise, I will need to write some importer... Let me know if you have some site online, I am curious.

@jimmi My current site with fictioneer is a work in progress. Its not set up for members yet. You can view it here: https://fiction.simplydanielradcliffe.com/
@marcy It looks great... almost perfect. Wow. Yes, it is the solution.
Frontend functionality - ideal efiction site. Yes, it is pretty cool.
I will post your site to our other admins to get their opinion. For us (me) it is a lot of work, to translate, to manage 2 different languages (and only one is supported with TextToSpeech functionality)... We (will) have a new site where I can imagine using this.
I just noticed - it has the issue that I found already with our site on WP... chapter URLs.
I want to finish 3.5.6 for PHP 8 and then I will look at this and my options in this area.
Thank you so much that you posted it here.

Thanks I am mostly done I just have to add all the chapters and a few stories I missed. though they didn't put much information on how to do that authorization for the login part for guest. I'll try and figure that out. Apparently all they have right now are google, discord, twitch and twitter for logins. There's not much for login system sadly
@jimmi Hey I getting this error with 3.56 for efiction
PHP Fatal error: Uncaught mysqli_sql_exception: Access denied for user in fiction/includes/mysqli_functions.php on line 7
