[Sticky] Web hosting – Any Recommendations?

I've read a ton of really good reviews for Heliohost, but after reading their ToS I'm still unsure as to whether an eFiction site that has smut counts as 'pornographic', since they specify photographs and pictures, not text. Does anyone have any insight on this? I'm looking at Heliohost until I can afford Fanst hosting.

Have you contacted their support? I'm sure they'd answer your question there.

I do not recommend dreamhost. A friend of mine told me they had a bug which caused lots of data loss (and also Wikipedia says so http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamhost#Incidents ) and that they treat really bad their customers.

I recommend, instead, italian hosting Netsons: they had a free plan (3rd level domains of netsons.com) with little removable ads, PHP/MySQL 5, unlimited bandwith/queries, 500MB of space, cPanel+Fantastico Deluxe, 5 eMails (+ unlimited forwarders), parkable domains and a weekly backup.
Base paid plan starts from 15€/year and gives a second level domain, plus lots of features (I can't check if the site is translated also in english - depending from user agent, I think - but I hope so)

I'm going to second the recommendation for InMotionHosting... I moved to them from Host Department a few years ago, and have had absolutely no problems.  Their Value Max plan ($5/month) gets you two MySQL databases, which allows you to have one for your "live" site and one to muck around with for testing purposes.

That said, stay far, far FAR away from Host Department.  They were great for the first two years or so, but they've been nothing but trouble for the last few years... and good luck actually getting in touch with anyone by phone or email.  Supposedly, the business is based out of Union City, New Jersey, but a Google search shows the business at that address is actually a plastic surgeon's office!

I have been on Hostgator now for about 2 years, after a disaster with my previous server. I love the Gator, for $7.95 a month i get unlimited mysql databases, unlimited ftp, pretty much more room than i could ever use.When there has been a problem (which sometimes is my fault) they have always been quick to respond and have always resolved it.

In the two years i have been with them, i think i have lost connection to the database about 4 times, and it is restored almost immediately and there has only been one time the site was down... there was a lightning strike or smt at the server housing. For shared hosting they are great. I run about 5 efics, 4 SMF forums, a couple of gallieries, a wiki and no problem with any of them.

why is nothing ever easy?

There's a lot of sites like this.  Be careful using them.  Most are not that reliable.

I would strongly recommend Jaguar PC for hosting. For just US$19/month you get a great VPS (which allows adult content) for a starting. Plus it's managed quite well. Add $7 more each month if you want to use cPanel (I recommend you do!) to manage your VPS.

This plan comes with:

    * 25 GB Disk Space
    * 3,000 GB Bandwidth
    * 512 MB RAM
    * 2048 MB Burst RAM
    * Equal CPU (1 core min.)

It's a great plan for just starting, and a reasonable price to boot. Plus Jag has excellent support, forums, and an excellent affiliate program for their customers where you can refer clients to them for cash. 😀 Plus I've heard that upgrading your account to a higher plan is a snap. I'll use them in the future and I'll be recommending it to all my friends and the writers/readers on my site.

Personally, I use http://freehostingcloud.com for my hosting needs and I'd definitely recommend them.

I've had downtime only once,  in the three years I've been with them, and that was only for about an hour on their free trial plan.
Also, The one time I had trouble with my account's login, they were very helpful at getting me back and able to sign in again.

o Their paid plan is $9.50 / per month, and they give you a code for a free domain name at sign up.
o The only real limitation to their free hosting trial is you're limited to under 2,000 visitors per month and there's a 30 mb file size limit. There is no time limit to that plan, though.

    Instant Activation
    No Forced Ads
    Ticket Support
    Unlimited Bandwidth
    Unlimited Web Space
    Unlimited Pointer Domains
    Unlimited MySQL Databases
    Unlimited Mailboxes
    PHP Mail
    Website Control Panel
    Virus Scanner
    Spam Filter
    Website Statistics
    Webmail
    50+ One Click Install Applications

That's what they come with.

The Free trial plan (i use it for a  blog, at the moment) doesn't have access to softaculous anymore, but they did replace it with Simple Scripts. And their FTP access is very stable and reliable. Also, it is free.

I have both the paid plan and a free trial as well. Both work well enough. Also, it works with Efiction, as I've run it on their service before.
PS: They do not block IP addresses that I know of, but do not allow adult content.

I personally recommend Awardspace http://www.awardspace.com/  and Freehostia is supposed to be good. They offer really great FREE hosting with no ads. You should be happy with either one of these but I know of more really great hosts, so let me know.

Good Luck !

I do not understand this. I was about to register my Domain  here: http://www.freehostia.com/ and first it says that I've to pay nothing per Month, and then it says I've to pay like 8.98?!
Help please... :/
