OK, as everyone seems to have a different opinion and different experience pf every hosting site on this thread, I need to narrow down what I'm looking at in order to decide who to try first.
I want a UK host, able to do eFiction without problems, and as much disk space as pos for as little as pos (preferably a free host, but I'm willing to fork out if it isn't too much). I looked at DreamHost and it looks really good but I can't afford a host like that, at least not at the moment.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

This has been a wonderful thread for recommendations. I'm about to launch my site and have been looking for hosts. I've noticed that most of the 'free' hosts do not allow adult fictions, but many of the paid ones do. I've e-mailed a few with some presale questions before I make my final decision.
Thanks for all the great info!
I've found a free host site that lists free hosts and what they provide. Go check it out: weehosts.com. 🙂 Hope you guys find what you're looking for.
Here's another one: free-webhosts.com.
I'm looking to move my website to another webhosting provider.
Does anyone have an opinion about Bravenet or Tripod?
I'm currently using PHPwebhosting, (two years) and haven't had too much of a problem, but they do not offer extras such as counters, guestbooks, etc. I have used Yahoo before, but they don't allow emailing from domain names and because of that the 'Contact Us' and 'Contact Author' functions don't work. Also, Yahoo is slightly higher than other webhosting sites.

You can download and install your own counters and guestbooks. You might look to see if they have something called fantastico installed. If so, there should be counters and guestbooks available there.

I would highly reccomend to avoid those two hosts, as they have been around since I started out a few years ago and are not what you would go looking for in web hosting. There are also free sites that offer offsite (external) guestbooks and such. And as Tammy said you can install your own. If you can install eFiction, then you can install guestbook/counter scripts. There are even ones that don't require a database.
Here are some new webhosts that everyone can take a look at:
(they all should have php/mysql)
http://www.1gb.in/ - 1 gb/1000mb webspace
http://www.my2gig.com/ - 2gb/2000mb webspace
http://www.zymic.com/ - 2gb/2000mb webspace
http://www.oxyhostsfree.com/ - 5gb/5000mb web space
NOTE ABOUT FREE HOSTS: Free hosts are good for what they are, free, but if you decide to move onto paid hosting, I do not suggest upgrading an account with a free host. I recommend finding a good paid host (one that does not offer free hosting).
http://www.surpasshosting.com is the best host I've ever had in the past 6 years of web design that I've had. They're cheap, good, and have GREAT packages! They're hardly ever down, and when they are, they get it back up as soon as possible
I also recommend Surpass, been with them just over 2 years and not had any problems had some teething troubles when I first joined with the server settings but they were helpful and sorted it out for me and uptime is good, and when they do go down they get it back as soon as possible

DO NOT GO WITH ZYMIC! They are absolutely evil! My site had a 3/1 downtime/uptime ratio, and I kept getting errors over all my pages. I asked them to fix it, and they didn't. They told me that I wasn't paying for the service, and as such, I had no right to ask for the problems to be fixed. I may also add that the stuff you are paying for is 99.9% uptime and 24/7 tech support. And then all the idioits who stay on the forum cause they have nothing better to do came and told me how wrong I was to want them to fix the problems. Granted, I was a bit rude because I was cheesed off by then, however, I did apologise for it later.. Yet it seems as though the apology was invisible to them.
I will need a new host now. 🙂
I'm looking for a host for eFiction.
Right now, I'm unemployed so I need a free one.
Any suggestions?
When I first got a domain, I used a Norwegian host, cause I didn't have a credit card back then ad any foreign hosts demanded credit card payment, but then I moved it to DreamHost and I've been with them ever since. They really do give a lot of bang for your buck, have a great reward system for getting new customers, as well as a deal with paypal giving your visitors a chance to support the site in a safe way, cause the donations can *only* go to paying for hosting.
I've read a ton of really good reviews for Heliohost, but after reading their ToS I'm still unsure as to whether an eFiction site that has smut counts as 'pornographic', since they specify photographs and pictures, not text. Does anyone have any insight on this? I'm looking at Heliohost until I can afford Fanst hosting.
