Hello! I know the developer focus right now is on eFic 5, but my archive is getting bombarded by bots and spammers this week, 3 spammers registered in the last 2 days and 1 of those getting off about 75 spam reviews before I could do anything >.< and I know another archive having the same problems. So I wanted to make a plea for anyone savvy with this kind of stuff to share their anti-spam measure and if they have any mods that helps them reduce the spam on their current 3.5.x installs!
Right now, I have it set up so users are sent their passwords, I have Bad Behavior installed, and I added this mod so that admins get an email alert when there's a new registration.
This is all a huge help, but the occasional mass spammer still gets through. The spammer I had get through today while I was asleep had a rather normal looking username, a kind of odd but possibly legit email and their IP address didn't turn up any red flags when I searched it, in other words even if I had seen the registration notice at the time, I really wouldn't have had any way of knowing it was a spammer until they posted reviews.
I wanted to make another plea for somehow setting it up so users need to be a validated reviewer before their stuff is published (much like how authors need to be validated for their stories to show up).
I know one archive that has a spam/security question set up, new users have to answer a fandom specific question or their registration will be denied, does anyone know how to set up such a thing on the registration form?
Any other anti-spam measure out there?
I have a couple ideas that I could try throwing together.
- Recaptcha on the reg page/review form
- A configurable timeout period between being able to submit reviews (per user)
I may be able to do the question thing also but not sure if I can make it random. Would at least be able to be changed at any time to something new.
