I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in this idea I had...short urls for fanfiction, similar to TinyURL for example. but you would be able to customize your own urls. I was thinking that this would be great for people on forums who would post links to fanfiction.net for example, as fanfiction.net provides minimal confusing seo/friendly urls.
It would also be great for any eFiction run archive as well as forums who just post stories as threads.
So for example, it would turn a url like this: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5252989/1/The_Second_Mistake into a url like http://ficurl.com/The-Second-Mistake
or
http://ink.accio.nu/viewstory.php?sid=279 to http://ficurl.com/Outside-Looking-In
Here's a demo of some of the scripts I could possibly use:
http://get-shorty.com/shorty/
http://themeforest.net/item/my-link-shortener/51104
or perhaps I could create a hybrid of the two using Drupal? It would also possibly like pligg but with ratings and the short url feature of course. If I made it would Drupal I could possibly hack it up a bit more and make it so that users have custom site profiles that they can make themselves so if they want to shorten a URL at FF.net they could have it with their username http://ficurl.com/username/story
Does anyone second this idea? Or any volunteers for this project?
Hm, so this is interesting. Have you seen the way that Wordpress handles URLs? I actually like that a lot. You get to choose a couple of formats in the general settings, and then with pages at least you can change what you want it be. Of course I don't necessarily advocate letting an author pick the URL for each of their stories. ; )
I actually just kidnapped My Link Shortener for the Jonas sites I work with. I'll let you know how things are going, whether we like it, etc.
I'm also a willing guinea pig if you need testers are such for your project.

I'd love one, and I'm sure my users would too. I'd offer to volunteer but It would have to be in about a week. Also my skins are still having problems and I'd like to fix that before I screw with other things.

We've got this script - http://themeforest.net/item/my-link-shortener/51104
Running over at http://www.tinyjonas.com
Not exactly the best user manual or installation directions, but after a few minutes of swearing we got it figured out. I can't tell you much about the CPU load since it's not in heavy use yet, but I'll try to pull some stats after a week or so.

That’s a sweet idea, especially for fanfiction.net, because especially in later chapters and c2’s the links can start to get super heavy. I think what you have looks pretty good so far. If you get this up and going strong, I would love to use it!
How would it be different from My Link Shortener and TinyURL other than that it being Fanfiction specific?
