I have had good luck with lunarpages.com in the three or so years I've been with them. They have always been helpful and friendly and they are good about applying new boosts in existing storage and bandwidth to existing users (it's currently 35GB of storage and 400GB/month bandwidth for $6.95) which not all places are.

We have had a woefully bad experience with lunarpages. Could install efiction, but no matter what we did, never could get it running correctly. They were unbelievably hopeless in trying to help and then woudlnt cancel the account so got stuck paying for another year and they still hadnt addressed whatever was wrong to not let us run efiction script (or any other script). I know of at least one other person on lunar that has no problem with efic but we have had no luck with them at all. So maybe something was just wrong with how they configured the accoutn, i don't know but i do know i would never go near them for a host.

why is nothing ever easy?

can I add that is bad...

freehostia I just found out blocks about half the worlds IP Adresses from viewing.
So if you are hosting a site that has a fandom around the world then this is not the place for you.

I've been with GoDaddy for 2 years now, and I've not had any problems with them.  I'm using virtual hosting with them, and I love how flexible they are.  True, the support blows chunks, but I know my way around servers to get around that, unless it's a catastrophic failure.  But then I haven't had a problem that severe since I signed on.

Archive: Ad Astra Star Trek Fanfiction Archive
Version: 3.5.3
Skin: One of Kali's, but I'm not sure. It's been heavily modded.

MySQL: 5.7.36

Is http://www.awardspace.com worth looking at for an eFiction archive?

Can you hold the stories in the stories directory or do they need to be loaded onto the database?

I'm having problems with my current host (webhostingbuzz) as they keep hijacking my domain names and pointing them to the wrong server - and the support SUCKS especially when they are the ones causing the problem in the first place!

Any other recommendations?

Awardspace is good. A little while ago I would have said one of the best free hosts was 110mb.com but now they charge for databases so... 😐

DON'T HIT KIDS.  No.  Seriously.  They have guns now.

Thanks. I may just give them a try then as I am sick of waiting days for WebHostingBuzz to fix their errors without even offering a single apology! They used to be a great webhost but I guess they've become too big and cumbersome now 🙁

The better hosts for eFiction sites (and pretty much all, I guess!) would be the paid.

I heartily recommend Holdfire. Support is fantastic, downtime is rare and quality of hosting is really good. They're a very reliable host.

I also know the owner who is always looking for more clients. 😀 (and she is honestly fantastic)

Thank you for the information.  Do you know or could you find out if they block out IP Addresses from various places around the world.

thanks again

Bella

You might be better off sending in a pre-sales question, but to my knowledge I don't think they do.

archive: dramione.org
site: accio.nu

Available for skin/mod commission! 🙂

That is what I did.  They are being extremely helpful in answering my questions.  Thanks again for the recommendation.

I realize I'm a bit late but...

I use GoDaddy only for my domain name of my Charmed site.  That's it.

For my Moonlight site, I use 2mhost.com  They are really great.  Cheap too $2.95/month.  The set up of the client panel is really easy to get around.  www.2mhost.com

Plus you can pay by check, money order, credit card, Pay Pal or wire transfer.

My Site: In The Moonlight
eFiction: v3.4.3
PHP: 5.2.4
MySQL: 5.0.27-standard
Mods: Challenges, Submit Time and Word Count

I use http://dreamhost.com
They're great, you can host or resell (to make extra money) as many domains as you want
I used the code:  DOTRHOST
in the promotional code box, to save $50. It works on no matter which plan you choose.

I just want to restate that ImHosted is NOT a good company to use for an eFiction site. They have been down, and keep going down, changing the permissions of the folder of my name site to zero, and my subsites day after day. And when the permissions are right, the mysql server isn't up, or their servers aren't up. Don't use ImHosted.

I've been with InMotionhosting.com since the summer of 2006....I have 2 main sites, one is used for QA/Dev while the other  is the actual site...On the QA machine, we've have 0 downtime since we started...on the Prod site, we've only had 2hrs since we started...including the 2.x to 3.x upgrade..

Our main archive site has over 700 members and is just humming...we also moved a Stargate forum from DreamHost ( who has really..really gone down...) to Inmotionhosting and have had 0 downtime since...
