URL to your eFiction: http://fiction.entstcommunity.org/
Version of eFiction: 3.5.3 (just upgraded to try to fix problem described below; no change in the error generated)
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: No
Version of PHP: 5.3.21
Version of MySQL: 5.1.66-cll
Have you searched for your problem: yes
If so, what terms did you try: "failed to open stream," "permission denied," plus read all the top-level upgrade error posts
State the nature of your problem: Unable to add stories, either by cutting and pasting or by uploading a TXT file. Header info loads fine. But when it comes time to add the story itself (preview works fine), this error comes up:
Warning: fopen(stories/1506/10119.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/entstcom/public_html/fiction/stories.php on line 530
In addition, users have reported failure of updated stories to be properly reflected in Most Recent. This started happening within the last 2 months, and I suspect it may have something to do with my host upgrading to a new version of PHP. But really I don't know.
Do you have a test account for us? No

check the chmod of the stories folder in question
in your ftp, right click the folder and click properties to find it. I use FireFTP for firefox.
Wish I could code faster, but this software is at End Of Life imho ever since mysql and php has been upped to 5.4. I don't know many servers that accept php below 5.3. If you wish to help with the codename: efiction4 project, check the news board.
$handle = fopen(STORIESPATH."/$uid/$chapid.txt", 'w+');
line that caused error

The CHMOD value of the stories folder is 777. I tried changing it to 666 but it wouldn't take (it gave me 677 instead). I changed it back to 777.
What ought it be? In any case, it didn't work.
(I appreciate the response though!)

I'm going to let someone wiser handle this then.
edit: are you able to show the php.ini file in the primary directory?

The only other chmod setting I've seen used other than 777 is 755. (I use 755 with no issues). However if this is a recent problem it may have something to do with your webhost. You might have to ask them.

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)
Now running v.3
There is no php.ini file in my eFiction directory.
I changed CHMOD to 755, same thing; changed back to 777.
I have a note in to my Web host to find out what the deal is, but I haven't heard back yet.
Thanks to all who responded! I appreciate it. I'd like to keep this archive going as long as I can, but I have no real PHP knowledge.

Its a hidden file, I'm under the premise that you'd need that file to override a setting the host set.

I did a search on the more specific "fopen" - I knew this sounded familiar!

Talk to your host about chown.
Ha ha! This sounds right. I have e-mailed my host.

SOLVED. My Web host had to alter folder permission settings. She did so, and uploads are now working.

YAY! Glad I could help.
