I am stuck on the variable used that shows the authors/members who are online in the efiction.
I have managed to get the variable guests correct which is obviously {guests}, but the authors bit is a bit confusing. Please can someone tell me what variable I should use to show the online members, authors.

For the Who's Online block I used {online_title} and {online_content}, which shows both guests and users.
According to the readme for the block, the variable you're asking for is {onlinemembers}.
From the readme:
This block for eFiction 3.0 displays which of your members is currently online
and how many guests are visiting the site as well. In addition to the standard
{blockname_title} and {blockname_content}, this block also adds {guests} as
the number of guests and {onlinemembers} as the hyperlinked list of members online.
