My site is currently at

http://www.marymo.net/paganbaby/

I'm having a problem with ads showing up on my viewstory.php pages. I'm not sure if it's showing up anywhere else. I was running version 1.1 with no problems until just this week. I want to upgrade to the current version but I don't know that upgrading will delete the spam/hack from my files.

http://www.marymo.net/paganbaby/viewstory.php?sid=99&i=1 (One of the pages that has hacked code on it)

Thank you for any help you can give me.

It depends on where the ad code is coming from. You should definitely try upgrading because 1.1 is very out of date and full of security holes.

Is there any way to find out where the code is coming from?

This article might also help, although some features may not apply (such as maintenance mode).

Check your files for an abnormalities, do you have the eFiction 1 version that you uploaded your site from? Maybe the files might have different file sizes that may help you see if a hacker edited your files directly.

You also may want to check your directories for any suspicious files.

Also, I have Filezilla and it will show you the last date modified for each file, so that should help find the modified/added files (depending on their relative level of sneakiness).  Other FTP clients should do this as well.  You should probably also check the database to be sure they didn't get in there too.

I went through the steps to see if there were any strange files and it doesn't look like there are. I've decided to try to install 3.5 anyway and just deal with reloading everything if I have to. I'm stuck in step two of the process now though. I'm getting the following message.

A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: RENAME TABLE fanfiction_settings TO fanfiction_settings_old
Error: (1050) Table 'fanfiction_settings_old' already exists

any idea where that table is and how I can get past this screen?

It either cycles so that the same screen comes up asking me to set the title prefix or when I try to do it manually... which honestly I'm not sure how to do... I get the following.
A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: INSERT INTO fanfiction_settings( `sitename`, `slogan`, `url`, `siteemail`, `store`, `autovalidate`, `multiplecats`, `reviewsallowed`, `ratings`, `roundrobins`, `submissionsoff`, `anonreviews`, `itemsperpage`, `imageupload`, `imageheight`, `imagewidth`, `skin`) VALUES('', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '')
Error: (1146) Table 'marymo.fanfiction_settings' doesn't exist

the variables need to match so the one with _old and the one without do not match and should be fixed so they do match, then one will override the other.

The second part deals with the default settings versus your tweaked settings. I run into that problem a lot when upgrading. I just make a new server, fresh install, make one look like the other (panels, settings, mods, blocks) and port the files. Then I change server location so the new server is now the main site.

It's not fun, and I don't think I ever did it consistently, but at least now I don't lose anything.
