I sign in to the admin and go to news. I try to add the news, save it/submit it and it says that the action was successful but it never shows up. Do I need to verify it somewhere or is something else wrong?

Site where I can't get the news to work, http://www.hiei-fan-club.jennifermohr.com/

Also, kinda an add on question here, is it at all possible to use a differant...program like CuteNews or FanUpdate instead of the new archive eFiction comes with? I've tried to change it but gave up because I could never get it to work. Is there a 'magic trick' to this or something?

Anyways, thanks, I really appriciate the help. 🙂

This isn't a solution, but please do not go with CuteNews! It's very buggy.

I actually like cutenews better then anything else "buggy" or not. I've been using it for some time now.

Whether you like it or not isn't an excuse for going with a known buggy script. Security vulnerabilities (in particular: XSS attacks), for the lose.

Seriously, go with FanUpdate over CuteNews.

Some FYI, I did a search and i found a site with example code you can use to break any site with XSS problems. It's very easy to use and find.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting but this is a layman's explanation.

Um, I like CuteNews. Not FanUpdate.
Anyways, can we get back to the actual topic of helping me instead of trying to decide which updating program you all think I should use for my site?
I mean, no offense, but I didn't ask your opinion on that matter. :/

[EDIT]
I'm not even sure what XSS is and honestly. It's my site, I'll use what I want. Okay? I've never had a problem with it (other then the spam).
[/EDIT]

Anyways, like I said, can we please get to the real topic of HELPING me? I mean, did you all not read the question(s)? I need help, not opinions. But thanks anyways.

So trying to prevent you from using a broken and unsafe program is not helping you?  😕 You ASKED us if you could use an alternate news system and we made suggestions based on your question, so don't get your knickers in a twists.

And frankly, I know I  can't help you with the news issue because your site is so broken right now I can't see anything but your footer and the main menu floating somewhere in the middle. I suggest you switch over to one of the skins that came with the archive until you figure out what's wrong with the modded one. Right now we don't know if it's a skin issue or a code issue.

Kali, I asked if I could add in cutenews or something. I didn't ask for another kind. I kinda wanted a yes or no answer with maybe a "how to".

And I don't see how my "broken site" has anything to do with the question or topic. I KNOW the site is broken. Please do not tell me what to do. I know I should probably put up a differant theme but then how would one be able to help me with my current broken? There would probably be no problem if I went back to the original themes. I'm not sure, and at this point I'm not too willing to try.

It looks like the issue is solved.  Is it?

And just FYI, you are being a little hostile.  I mean, "please don't tell me what to do"?  You asked for help - your site was broken and the questions were targeted at figuring out what was wrong with it.  Sometimes people here will give you unsolicited advice if it's in your best interest, and I really don't see the purpose of getting upset over it.  Just say "thanks for the advice, noted" and move on, even if you don't plan on following the advice. I also suggest that if someone tells you that you have a security problem, instead of saying that's it's not important since you don't know what it is, that you actually investigate the problem. Ignorance does not equal bliss when your site can get hacked.

Incidentally, in the future if you do know for a fact that you are having a skinning issue, like you seemed to, then there is a separate board for skin issues.

The issue about the new archive is solved. I recently figured it out. But I'd still like to know if I can use CuteNews or FanUpdate. If so, how can I add them to the page instead of the current news archive?

And I already know all about CuteNews' flaws and security problems. EVERYONE says it, that's why I got...touchy? It's just extremely annoying because everyone says that. And no one was answering the actual question. Instead they were telling me about how CuteNews was insecure. And everyone already knows that anyways.

And yeah, the forum topic was moved to the correct place. I didn't know if it was a skin problem at the time that's why I didn't put it there. You kinda made me feel like I must be some sort of idiot for not knowing.

It is possible in theory that you should be able to add the includes in your tpls in place of the news block. A full integration would require heavily modifying the script, and since eFiction comes with a functioning the script, and its unlikely that anyone will want to do that given the opposition to CuteNews (and for good reason. You may not care about security risks, but your webhost will and they won't be much help if you get hacked.)

I'd suggest that you give it a try and let us know how it goes.

(A bit late into this, but I figured I'll just give my 2 cents)

I used to use CuteNews  and have heard of FanUpdate, as third party scripts, they are harder to integrate into eFiction, in theory it can definitely be done by someone with enough PHP/MySQL knowledge.

No one is trying to tell you you're an idiot for liking CuteNews and not knowing that it is insecure, people are simply forewarning you and telling you to stay away from it. You can choose to do so or not either way it's your site. To clarify what Carissa said, you could try modifying your tpl files to have php includes of the CuteNews script.
