Not a hard mod I believe. I just have no idea what variables or calls to make in the script to pull it off. I have a few people assisting me in adding categories and characters so It'd be great if I could see on the category page the number of characters that have been assigned to that category. I'm not terribly organized and this would make it a bit faster. I guess I have further sub categories that would also need numbers.

admittedly, making a backup sql file on a regular basis and seeing if that section was lengthened would also work, but still not as fast as setting this mod up and the other level 1 admins can use this too unlike the backup file.

I've looked at the browse.php code and found the variables for categories, seems I need to make a mysql call and collect the number of characters somehow. So over my head, but I guess I'll keep staring at the code for now.
