Hi all,

I’m looking to change the web hosting company I’m using at the moment. I’ve found Steve3D’s articles really helpful, but I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations so I could narrow down my initial search?

I personally recommend Awardspace http://www.awardspace.com/  and Freehostia http://www.freehostia.com/ is supposed to be good. They offer really great FREE hosting with no ads. You should be happy with either one of these but I know of more really great hosts, so let me know.

Good Luck !

I'm with A Small Orange, and I've really gotten on pretty well with them. The guys are very nice and helpful, and my site's been stable so far.

I'm with Site5 Webhosting right now.  So far, no complaints.

Whatever you do, stay away from Mesopia, Netbunch, or Webhostplus. (They're the same company, actually.)  They have to be the worst hosts I've ever had.

EDIT: 03 Jan 2007 -- I thought I'd better mention that I've had to deal with Site5's tech support for the first time during the past couple weeks.  They are superb!  Best support out of all the hosts I've ever had.

I'm sorry, but due to my schedule, I am not available for commissions.

I recommend http://dreamhost.com .  They give you a lot of bang for your buck, and I haven't had any problems with them.  I've been using them for almost a year.

Don't go with IMHosted with a larger archive. They go down more than they should, block IPs of your most active members and don't have enough connections to the database so the site moves slow, or pages don't fully load.

With a small archive with just a few members they should be okay though.

I'll have to 2nd bunny on the reccomendation of Dreamhost, though if you do not wish to spend money, there are people that host for free (that are not companies) such as myself, if you're interested.

If you don't mind pay sites, doteasy is really good. I've been with them from when I was using their free sites (unfortunately their free doesn't have php/mysql in their services). The ultra hosting is $95 a year. And their customer support is great (even when you are a free site they are extremely helpful). They've helped me with my efiction site in the past almost as much as Tammy and Carissa have.  😆

Suggestion to the moderators... maybe you could make this post a stickie since it's a frequently asked question around here.

I just had to second Site5 ( http://www.site5.com). I actually just transferred my two sites over to them in the last week and a half and absolutely love their tech support and forum section. I always get fast replies to any questions and they're always nice in replies. Their control panel is just awesome and they have a great $5 deal going on right now.

I left Netrillium (so I don't really recommend them unless you know what you're doing and never need tech support) and before that, I was at Active Web Hosting, which I DEFINITELY do not recommend.

A big thank you to all, the negatives are pretty helpful too, it's always nice to know what/who to avoid.

We get a bit of cash in from being associates of amazon (for those that don't know if you put a link to amazon and someone makes a purchase after clicking through the link your site gets a kick back of up to 6%) a cafepress store and donations so we are in a position to pay a little.

But I'm all too aware that's it's not my money so I want to get the best possible deal especially for those kind people that donate.

So again - Thanks and keep 'em coming.

I have had good luck with lunarpages.com in the three or so years I've been with them. They have always been helpful and friendly and they are good about applying new boosts in existing storage and bandwidth to existing users (it's currently 35GB of storage and 400GB/month bandwidth for $6.95) which not all places are.

I have a reseller account and I'm hosting sites if you're interested. I don't register domain names, so you need to already have one.

It's $3.50 per month
1000mb
unlimited bandwidth
unlimited MYSQL, email accounts, fantastico (phpbb, wordpress, etc.)

If you're interested email me at sockmonchi@playitforward.com

Actually, it's 800GB/month bandwidth.  I have a two different accounts with them I deal with, and I've been satisfied so far.

Are you sure that they aren't just overselling?

If you have no idea what I am talking about, register at the Simple Machines Forum and read this post: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=117303.0

Edit: you can also just go to his website: (it's not as pretty as the SMF post but the info's still there)

Pretty sure.  The plan when I signed up was more in line with the market, and they've just upgraded it in the last month.  The archive I maintain has been with them for several years and never had any issues, though the most bandwidth we use per month is usually 30-40GB.  If there is an "invisible limit" we haven't yet reached it.

Also, I re-read through the TOS and the Acceptable Use policy, and found nothing out-of-the-ordinary, in the vein of the article linked.  They can be found here: http://www.lunarpages.com/sitemap/

Anything's possible, I suppose, though currently I have no cause for complaint.
