Site details:
URL to your eFiction: http://archive.worldofslash.com/index.php
Version of eFiction: 3.4.2
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: None
Version of PHP: 5.2.X
Version of MySQL: 5.0.24a-standard-log
Have you searched for your problem: Yes
If so, what terms did you try: categories, categories messed up, sub categories, sub-categories,
State the nature of your problem: Locked Sub Categories of a Sub Category are not showing in the Add story page for either Admin or Regular users.

Example 1: Books -> Harry Potter has the below sub categories:

Harry/Cedric
Harry/Draco
Harry/Severus
Remus/Severus
Other Pairings

and

Example 2:

Media -> Boy Bands
Backstreet Boys
*NSYNC
98 Degrees
O-Town
Other Boy Bands
Multiple Boy Bands

When I clicked on Harry Potter or Boybands, none of the above sub categories show up in IE or Firefox. The other categories that have 3 or more levels of categories before getting to a story is fine, but this one isn't.

For Example: Media > Television > Daytime > As the World Turns, etc. The nine soaps that are on television. So those are actually sub-categories of a sub-category's sub-category. The soap titles are a bit further in then the HP/Boyband ones. Since that's only Books > Harry Potter > Harry/Cedric, etc. and Media > Boybands > Backstreet Boys, but they don't show up.

However, the Harry Potter and the Boybands sections which were locked at the main level when the update was applied. So perhaps the root of the problem has something to do with those two categories being locked when the update was applied?

We have tried to a: Unlock the categories, and b: Re-upload the stories related files. Neither helped.

Any ideas?

Dreamy

We experienced kind of the same problem at our site. Our solution was to list a sub-category without another sub-sub-category first.

For example, Spring was a sub-category in The Four Seasons Challenge which was a sub-category of Challenges (Challenges --> The Four Seasons --> Spring). We were able to select "Challenges" and then "The Four Seasons", but no Spring and the other sub-sub-categories weren't showing up.

I found out that by moving another sub-category "Hospital Wing," which does not have any sub-sub categories, to the top of the Challenge category solved this problem. So instead of seeing "The Four Seasons" at the top of the Challenges category, I see "Hospital Wing". Then when I select "The Four Seasons" again, now second on the list, I'm able to see my sub-sub-categories such as "Spring".

I hope that wasn't too confusing xD

Well, I tried moving it to the main category and then moving it back, and several other things, I had to resort to deleting all the categories and using a backup because once I moved them, they wouldn't move back. *grumbles* any other ideas? This didn't happen before the update.

I registered at your site to see what you're talking about. I noticed that Harry Potter is at the top of the Books category and Boy Bands is at the top of the Media category. I also noticed that Phantom of the Opera and Celebrities had no sub-categories. Move Phantom of the Opera to the top of the Books category and Celebrities to the top of the Media category. That should get Harry Potter and Boy Bands working.

Well the owner of the site likes the categories in alphabetical order, but until Tammy can fix it, I guess it's the only way huh? I can't believe that it was just that simple to fix. Too bad I didn't think about that before. lol

Thanks for your help!

How odd. How I found out about it was that I was trying to submit a new story. The main Harry Potter category is locked, to force the people submitting to submit to a further sub category. However, when I clicked on Harry Potter, it didn't show it's sub categories. I asked Jayson, the site owner about it, and he tried and had the same problem. So then I logged into Mysql and tried re-installing the categories section. That didn't work either, so I submitted this error.

Now, as I said before, when I moved the Pirates of the Caribbean and the other empty category that didn't have a further subcategory, this problem disappeared. However, I can't put the categories in alphabetical order without it stopping to work.

As I said, I have no idea if this happened because the category was "Locked" when the site was upgraded, or if it was something else.

Can you please check and see if this is still an issue with 3.5? Thank you!

I made a category 'test' and locked it, made atest, btest, and ctest. locked b. I then made dtest under btest and went to add a new story via my account (using csszen), and it works fine. These are not in alphabetical order atm. I guess i'll go about adding a few more categories and rearranging them after. Yeah, I'm unable to reproduce after update to 351.
