I think it usually stands for "subversion." SVN is actually the name of a specific version control system ( http://subversion.tigris.org/). Whether or not that's the exact one integrated into Sourceforge I'm not sure. My aunt actually just installed it on her PC and I think I'm going to at some point this week.
I don't really understand what it does. Is it just a repository for the files of all the different versions?
