Ok, so, two of my longer stories have very large chapters. Like, ten plus pages in Word. Some of them I've done by hand to upload directly into the TinyMCE box, but as they've grown bigger, they simply won't upload; they're just too large.
So I hit upon a different solution: I take the chapter in Microsoft Word 07, save it as an HTML, then copy the code and paste it directly into the story's text file in the ftp directory. Most of the time it's been working; two chapters, however, keep coming up with all of the HTML in the story, screwing up the entire thing. You can see it here: http://www.meijinhada.org/fallendown/viewstory.php?sid=26&chapter=5
The weird thing is that the chapters preceding it are totally fine, and saved exactly the same way in Word, from the same exact file; I didn't change text, methods, or anything. Yet this chapter (and the next, that I deleted out of frustration) keep showing up all wonky like this. I turned off TinyMCE; that didn't fix it. Does anyone have a possible idea of what I have to do?
Um, personally, I've found that saving Word files as .html files can be a bit messy and unpredictable. I'm too lazy to hand-code it, so I just save it as a .txt file. (I find that with Word 2007 that I need to hit the return key twice after each paragraph.) If I need to add bold or italics, I'll just do that with the TinyMCE editor afterwards.
I hope this helps!
Why don't you use the file upload instead of the tinyMCE box?

Tried that, the file's too big; it just loads the same page and claims I need to either put something in the story box, or upload a file. And the whole reason I tried the HTML bit was to avoid having to go back through ten+ pages of writing and hand code italics and the like. 'eh. Maybe I'll just try and figure something else out.
If all else fails, you could always split the chapter into smaller files and add the parts as separate chapters.
You know, I'm not sure that 10+ pages in Word is actually all that large. Barring no margins & a really small font for you, or something like that, I see 10+ pages all the time. I review fic at two moderated eFiction archives, and I usually paste the text into a Word document to highlight problems so I'll remember them later. I'd say the average chapter (1.5 inch margins, I think 10pt font) is around 8 pages. I've often had chapters that were 15-20 pages, or even more. No one seems to have any trouble uploading this amount of text. I believe most of them either copy it into the story text box or use the file upload feature. The difference may be that at the one site, no one uses TinyMCE because it has been completely removed. At the other, not as many use it because the default is that it's off, and not many people realize it's an option.
To me it sounds like this may be something server-specific. Can you use PHPinfo to see what your max upload file size is, maybe?

I dunno; it's only been a problem since I upgraded to the 3 versions. PHPInfo in the Admin folder?
Yes, there's a PHPInfo option in the admin control panel. I think what would be good to know in this case as post_max_size and upload_max_filesize.

Hmm...check what you have in your allowed tags. That sounds like you've got something in the HTML (probably at the very beginning of the file) that's not allowed and therefore stripping everything out. I'd open your HTML file in notepad and see what's at the top of the file.

It saays...post_max_size is 8M, and upload_max_filesize is 2M.

That's the normal defaults. I think Tammy has the right idea.
Well, even if at normal defaults, if I use the Paste from Word option in Tiny MCE and post directly out of Word, I have the same upload problem; it just reloads the page and doesn't do anything. And if I copy directly from Word, it really does seem to be a size issue.
I tried saving as HTML in Open Office instead, and that works better, though the story has a huge right margin for some reason. Now I'm trying to figure that out.
You can't copy and paste directly from Word. You can't upload a Word document either. It causes errors. You have to upload your story as plain text or HTML. I suggested plain text, because not everybody who uses eFiction is that familiar with HTML, and well, I don't know anything about you. I don't know how much experience you have with it. Word inserts an awful lot of junk code, and it can take a while to delete it all, as you've probably discovered. It's possibly faster to copy and paste your story text into Notepad and add the tags yourself. Permitted tags are <b> <i> <u> <center> <hr> <p> <br /> <br> <blockquote> <ol> <ul> <li> <img> <strong> <em>. (They're listed on the page when you go to add your story.) Delete everything else. Save it and try uploading it again.
This is exactly what I do. Note that you don't even need to use break or paragraph tags. Simply having paragraph returns in there will work, much like this forum or blogs like Livejournal. (In other words, you only need to really use tags for things like italics, bold, etc.)
On another note, is there a particular reason you removed the credit links from the skins?
Skins made by Kali are no longer supported!
