I noticed that there is a field and admin functionality for validated / unvalidated members.
But I can't find where this field is used (to limit something for unvalidated users).
It is just info for the administrator?

It has to do with submissions. If under Admin > Settings > Submission settings you have "Automatically validate all stories" set to "No" then all stories submitted get sent to the Submissions queue until an admin validates it (I believe this is the default setting). If you validate an author from their profile then that means their submissions will be published automatically. At our archive we validate authors that have submitted a few things and have shown they adhere to the submission rules.
