My webhost recently did some upgrades (sorry, I can't remember what exactly), and now there are problems on the site with updating stories. What do you think happened, and how can we fix it?
When an author updates a fic, they are likely to get this error after a long loading process:
A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: UPDATE ***fanfiction_stories SET updated = NOW( ) WHERE sid = '1301'
Error: (2006) MySQL server has gone away
This only happens to some stories, and not others, however. The chapter is added, but the update date doesn't change, and the story is not added to the Most Recent list. I'm not sure if people get e-mail alerts. Some have reported getting multiple alerts for the same story.

Have you tried repairing your tables?
Okay, I went into the mysql database and went to the Operations tab and clicked on Repair Table. I hope that's what you meant. π Maybe this will fix it. I repaired every table individually.

nope, didn't work. I tried to validate a chapter and it came up as
A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: INSERT INTO ***fanfiction_log (`log_action`, `log_uid`, `log_ip`, `log_type`) VALUES('Jan_AQ validated Life as Dictated by a Talking Hat (chapter 7) by RhiannanT.', '3', INET_ATON('98.243.114.121'), 'VS')

Talk to your host. Seems like you're having troubles with the mySQL server.
Yeah, I thought so. π Bah.

i sent a support ticket into my host. They said:
It appears that there were about 830 quereies hung that was causing the service to partially stop working. We have corrected this issue and it seems to be working now. If the problem still presist on your end could you please provide us a link on how to replicate the issue?
So maybe (hopefully) it will be fixed now. π

Well it didn't work. π We're still having problems.
How can we give them a link to replicate the issue? it's adding a story that's a problem.
Edit: I ended up getting the log in info from one of our authors who was having problems and forwarded that.

Okay is the latest messages my host has sent me:
We checked your issue. You are in a shared server and we have a set of standard configuration in our shared servers. You have limitations for accessing mysql connections. We can't allow huge number of mysql access. So for resolving this issue you may please consider upgrading to a dedicated server.
Awaiting for your reply
Great. I'm feeling that they just don't know what's wrong so they gave up and are just trying to get me to upgrade. That or they lowered some connection limitations.
Do you think that the only way to solve this issue is to move to a dedicated server? We didn't have any problems before the server software updgrade earlier this month, and while our archive is fairly large, it is not incredibly large and popular.
This is what they did:
What: HTTP server software upgrade
Impact: Estimated 20-40 minute HTTP service outage
Details:On April 1st we will be upgrading the HTTP server software on the server your website(s) reside. We will be upgrading to the web server software to Apache 2.2.x and installing updated security rule sets. These upgrades will allow for enhanced performance and security on your shared hosting environment.
This maintenance will occur between 12:00am and 04:00 am and the estimated downtime is between 20-40 minutes. All other hosting services such as mail, mysql, dns will function normal and should not be interrupted.
I guessing that the problem has something to do with updated security rule sets. Unfortunately, their promise of "enhanced performance" did not ring true.

Rather than paying for dedicated hosting, I'd think about switching hosts.
Yeah, I'm really considering it. Quality of service should not suddenly decrease halfway through your contract.
they replied with this:
Hello,
We are apologizing for the delay in getting back to you.
We checked your issue and found that you have a large number of mysql access. The issue was related to the mysql connections. You are in a shared server and we have a set of standard configuration in our shared servers. You have limitations for accessing mysql connections. We can't allow huge number of mysql access. So for resolving this issue you may please consider upgrading to a dedicated server.Thank You,
PS: Please try to reply through help desk.
Is there any thing else we can do to resolve the issue than simply switch hosts?

Was this issue ever resolved? I am having the same issue with my site but we are on a dedicated server. I've searched all over the forums and found no other answers. My problem didn't start happening until January 3, 2013. I thought maybe the changeover to the new year somehow affected the programming. If anyone has any other suggestions for this I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
~Jenn
