I run www.yourfanfiction.com and I've allowed for people to get email alerts for when their favourite authors/atories update. However, I've noticed that, when a new user signs up, they have to go into their settings and tick the boxes to allow the emails. Is there any way to change it so that these boxes (Contact for new reviews, contact for when an author responds to a review and contact when favourites are updated) are automatically ticked for new users so, instead of opting in, a user would have to opt out instead?
I've tried looking through the forums and can't find an answer so, hopefully someone out there can help.

You'd have to change the core files. If you're comfortable with PHP / MySQL you can do it.
It looks like based on this code (line 91 of user/editbio.php)
dbquery("INSERT INTO ".TABLEPREFIX."fanfiction_authorprefs(uid, userskin, storyindex, sortby, tinyMCE) VALUES('".$useruid."', '$skin', '$displayindex', '$defaultsort', '$tinyMCE')");
that it relies on the default table settings. So in that case you could try changing the defaults for the necessary fields in fanfiction_authorprefs to 1. Or I suppose you could just change the query. : ) Either way, you'll want to test it, as I have not.
