Celestial,

Please don't be cranky here. The answer it depends on how you want it to look is a valid one.

If you want your website to be http://www.yourwebsite.com/efiction (then unzip the efiiction folder and move that entire folder using filezilla)

If you want your website to be http://www.yourwebsite.com and have the efiction appear there (you unzip the efiction folder then move the individual files using filezilla.

I use filezilla and will tell you to pay close attention as you upload the files because filezilla sometimes times out and not all the fills will be moved. Especially when uploading a large group of files like you will when uploading efiction files.

After doing that then go to your website at yourwebsite.com/efiction/install (if you chose the first suggestion) or yourwebsite.com/install if you chose the latter.

I understand you may be frustrated, but you are asking what should be a basic question and anyone who has ever worked with websites should understand. Installing a script is not for the faint of heart.

I am not being cranky, it is just that I was irrated that I wasn't getting a straight answer.

What do you mean by "Installing a script is not for the faint of heart."

First of all, I'm not a web desginer. I honestly have never even had to deal with FPT or servers or anything. I did build sereval websites but all were the sort of website that are already halfway built for you and you just add the content. So I'm not a computer wiz, I'm barely 17  so I haven't been building sites for years.

Never in my life had I have to deal with servers or anything. I mean if everyone is yelling at newbies because they don't understand, what kind of support site is this. This is a support forum and shouldn't support be being given?

I didn't expect everyone to snap on me just because I made a statement (that anyone who has been trying to get their site together for weeks would say).

I have never installed scripts before, and you shouldn't expect everyone who joins this site or posts topics to be a script wiz.

What you said here made me feel as if you were calling me an idiot, but in a nicer way: "I understand you may be frustrated, but you are asking what should be a basic question and anyone who has ever worked with websites should understand. Installing a script is not for the faint of heart."

I haven't worked with websites so like I said before I'm not a pro. I'm sorry if I came off as being cranky or mean, but honestly, I feel as if I have a right to be a bit irrated or highstrung because everyone keeps talking to me like I'm stupid.

I think that the tutorial for efiction 3.0 was not in-detailed enough. You just mentioned two ways to install efiction, yet the tutorial only mentioned the first.

I tried what you said yet, I still keep being sent to a 404 error page.

I don't think I was calling you an idiot. No one needs to be a pro to do this either. I've been doing websites for years (nothing on a professional level). Efiction gave me fits in the beginning, but kept going until I figure it out. If you felt I insulted you, I apologize.

Just for grins create a simple index file and see if uploading just that file will show up on the web. Something like

<html>
<head><Title>Test Index Page</title></head>
<body>
<h1>Hello World!</h1>
<P>Sorry guys I'm still working the bugs out on this webpage. Hopefully soon you will see fictiony goodness.</P>
</body>
</html>

Save it as index.html; upload it to your site and see if you still get a 404 error. If so, maybe you are uploading to the wrong directory. I must confess I have no experience with 0000Free.com. It may be something they are doing on their end that's messing up things for you.

If you are not wedded to that website, I think Becca here hosts sites. Or she use to. (I think it was Becca). [Yep, it was: https://efiction.org/forums/index.php?topic=6820.0 ] contact her by mail though. I don't know if she is still doing hosting.

Babaca forgot the <body> tags in the above HTML so I added them.

Thanks... I wrote that at the end of the day when my brain was looking for a nap. It figures I'd leave something out. Thanks for adding it.

It's still not working, plus I have the right directory. Maybe it is because my site is still processing it but either way it's not working.

It seems like you might be better off at a new host; this one doesn't sound too promising and helpful. If Becca is not hosting any more, I would suggest looking at bubble.nu as a free-host alternative.

Thanks for the link, put bubble does not look legit. I don't want a webhost which shuts down or steals my credit card info. And the support on bubble looks even worse than my current host. Plus, bubble on has around 300 sites it's hosting, which is another thing that turns me away from it. I may try it, but I know it isn't a host I'd want to stay with.

If I'm already having problems with my current host, why would I go to another one with even worse support? But thanks anyway. Do you use bubble or something because if you use it and find that it isn't a scam than I might try it.

What makes me not like them more is this:

"Link back to Bubble.nu at all times in an obvious place. We will on occasion conduct code checks and if we find you are not linking back we will contact you. If you fail to reply your account may be removed."

I don't want to have to link back to them. I feel that there service is way to constricting.

And here:
"Hosted websites must be for personal use only. Meaning you can not use your website to sell goods. Wether it be hand made goods, graphics, layouts or anything else. Your space is free to use, so there is no reason to provide a paid service for others. If you have donated to Bubble this rule does not apply and you may use your space to sell goods, advertise, etc."

It seemes to me their a little money hungry. I also have to wait for them to approve me, which is time I don't have. I also already contacted becca, and I haven't gotten a reply.

I just checked my site to see if my index.html page was up and it is: http://storiesunderthemoon.co.cc/

So I guess it does work. But why is efiction still not working?

Forget what I said before, efiction is working! My sister kept looking over my shoulder while I was working on some files and she noticed that I had put efiction under a sub folder. I enter the sub folder name in my web bar and it took me to the efiction install screen. My only worries is that it may install under a sub folder, but heck, I'm too tired to fix it.

That's what we've been trying to explain to you.  Take the files in the sub-folder and move them up to the main folder. Just make sure you keep the same structure for those files as in the subfolder.

well ya'll really did a sorry job of explaining it. I'd expect you to give better help since YOU CREATED EFICTION 3.0! It doesn't matter anyway, since I already installed it. So any attempt to rain on my parade now would but useless. Now that I know how to do it, I would have explained it better to somone else. I had to go to my file manager, since I couldn't see any other files using fpt. All I could see using fpt was / and the files I upload. If it wasn't for my sis suggesting I'd play around with it in the file manager, I would have never installed it.

I'm not sure if this forum has the feature to lock topics, but if it does can somone lock this topic or whatever? Is there any "solved" button I can put at the top of this thread?

I have had no personal involvement with bubble.nu (I pay for my own webhosting) but I know people who are hosted with them and they seem to enjoy and like the service given. If they are asking for money or give extra perks for donations, then I'd say that was OK because hosting sites isn't cheap/free. The linking back is essentially like referring other people to them which gives them more customers etc. For free hosting, that's an OK price; plus a little thank you. As far as I know, it isn't a scam.

If you want a decent host with decent support though, the best way is to go paid.

However, it seems like you've got it sorted now. πŸ™‚

You can edit your first post to put [solved] in the title.
