I was thinking about installing the software but....the place seems like it's a ghosttown. I'm really interested in this, but I want to know people are still around first. I would even pay to buy this software if that's what it'd take to get activity back in this place. This seems like the best fiction software out there, so it'd totally be worth it! 😀
Well, it depends. 3.5.3 seems to be very, very stable except for a few minor issues (mainly with installing on strange hosts). Most of what people need help on are themeing and making the software do something that's not standard.
As far as getting help with your theme/making the software do something, it's hit or miss that someone can help you. There are a bunch of good people, but I think they (like me) only visit every now and then.
As far as more activity, I'd bet when a new version comes out, the people will surface in droves to get it up to snuff.

There are still people around, but you're right that it's not as much as it used to be. Development slowed down after the main developer had some health issues. The script is somewhat out of date in the sense that newer versions of PHP and MySQL don't always interact well with it - particularly part of the install file need to be changed to install properly. But those types of questions are getting resolved, if not as quickly as before.
