Hi, I have been thinking about upgrading my archive for a while now from 1.1 to 3.4.2 as I am getting a lot of spam, even with anonymous reviews turned off.
I have been trying to go through the forum to find examples of people having successfully upgraded but I have not found many, I must say the support forum might not be the best place to look for that.
I am very nervous about upgrading and losing data, as I have many authors and stories. Could you let me know if there has been a lot of success in this type of upgrade?
My archive has also been moded. Could that create errors during the upgrade?
I was also wondering if it was possible to do a fresh install of the newest version and then transfer data from the old database to the new one? (ETA) My host lets us choose between Mysql 4 or 5. My archive being old I assume it is a MYSQL 4, so if I do a transfer, should my new database be a version 4?
thanks for your help
ETA can you still get spam/reviews with the latest version?
I upgraded from 1.1 to 3.0 when 3.0 first came out. It went fine but sometimes it doesn't. Be sure to save all your files and backup your database before you start so you can revert back if something goes wrong.
I would think you could switch from MySQL 4 to 5 with stuff in the database. If your host won't let you do it like that, you should make a new database in your MySQL 5 database and import the stuff from 1.1. Test it to make sure it's working then run the upgrade. The upgrade runs many queries on the database so you can't just use your 1.1 database with 3.0 files.
You can still get spam reviews, but 3.0 has the option to turn on a CATPCHA which will greatly cut down, if not all together eliminate, your spam problem. Also, 1.1 is very insecure and you will be much more protected from hackers if you upgrade.
thanks for you reply.
Is it needed to have a MYSQL 5 for the latest version of efiction?
ETA: are there any typical reasons why an upgrade encounters errors?
No you don't need mysql 5. I wouldn't say typical, but common, reasons an upgrade fails usually has to do with modifications, incorrectly CHMOD'd files/folders (check your config.php before starting), and connection problems. I would suggest you make a copy of your site, upgrade the copy then switch the upgraded copy for the original version.
