Sorry for not having a support request template; this question isn't related to any site in particular.
I've been seeing some problems recently in the Spanish language forums with the translated language files. Replacing with the original English files usually helps, but I'm wondering what the source of the problem is. Maybe this is too general, but why do these files sometimes not work? Is it the special characters like ñ á, and so on? Is it because of the _CHARSET? (What I've seen happening is that when certain pages load, stuff doesn't appear. It hits a certain character or such in the language file and kills everything, I think.)
I guess I'm looking for what to tell people to do when they have issues with their language files, other than just to use English instead.
Well to find the problem part, put the English file back then switch the translations a few at a time until you hit a group that causes the problem. Then put those back to English and translate them one at a time until you find the specific issue. Most likely, there's something they've done in the translation. I think the most common I've seen is there's a definition in the language file that controls how stories are sorted. It specifically says do not translate, but people have done so and caused errors that way. Another issue might be with quotes not matching up. I doubt special characters or the character set would cause any issues.
Okay, thanks! I'll have to look for the section you mentioned.
