URL to your eFiction: http://themasque.net/efiction/index.php
Version of eFiction: 3.3.1
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: no
Version of PHP: 5.2.5
Version of MySQL: Not Sure
Have you searched for your problem: Yes
If so, what terms did you try: Text Formating, Square Character, a bunch of things
State the nature of your problem:

The first part of the problem is that when users paste their stories into the chapters text area all of the formating lost. Returns are removed, tabs are removed, etc. So all paragraphs end up running into each other and makes a mess.

The "fix" that we tried was getting people to save their story as HTML and then paste the HTML into eFiction. That way the HTML tags are there to handle the formating. The second problem comes when users do copy the HTML version of the story. Once the story is submitted characters like quotes and apostrophes end up turning into square characters.

Are you talking about when you copy and paste from a text editor such as Microsoft Word or Notepad? If so, I think there's a mod/module that you can install for that.

Yeah I guess that is what I'm talking about.

How do other authors use Efiction? they write the story directly into the website?  😐

I usually copy and paste my stories form another website like Fanfiction.net into the TinyMCE editor on my eFiction archive. When paragraphs run together like yours, it just means that their formatting is missing those line breaks and such. Try saving it different ways, and using different programs. What program are they using? Microsoft Word? Try other programs, like Wordpad, and OpenOffice. Sometimes copying and pasting text, and saving it, closing the file and reoping the new one will solve the formatting issues so you can copy from the new version and have it work out right.

When there is extra coding, or not enough and the sentences run together, I usually  do a Find and Replace search on the formatting code of the text. I use Macromedia Dreamweaver, I am sure that there are other programs out there that you can use to do the same thing as well. You can actually replace a blank carrier using the Find and Replace in the code area with </p><p> to make paragraphs and have the story text show up correctly on your archive.

Your archive is probably just using a plain text box, and not TinyMCE. TinyMCE is what formats text automatically when you copy and paste. Otherwise, it often just ends up as plain text without any of the formatting.

I'm just looking for a hassle free way for users to be able to put their stories on the site. I would think that would be a fundamental part of eFiction.

Yes, use TinyMCE.

Under Site Settings I have "Use tinyMCE WYSWYG editor:" set to "yes"

TinyMCE doesnt appear active on the site.

When I click "TinyMCE Configuration" I get a page with the title "Message Settings" and a blank textbox.

I'm sorry I was mistaken, I was thinking of Tammy's module for print to MS Word, not the other way around. I think I may have found a solution, if you perhaps update to the latest TinyMCE, their support for MS Word/other editors is now better and all you would have to do is click the button that looks like MS Word, and copy and paste your text from MS Word and it should still save the formatting.

Someone recently asked about upgrading to the latest version of TinyMCE, if you search you should be able to find it here, or I can try looking for it. But first I think you should upgrade to the latest version of eFiction 3.4.2, it may fix up any problems you are having and you might not have to do anything. Give it a try.

You have to turn TinyMCE on in site settings, and in your own personal account settings to see it.

Got it thanks. I didnt realize I had to turn on TinyMCE in my profile too.

Unfortunantly it doesnt seem to work in Opera but in IE it's fine (so hopefully all the users will be good)

What version of Opera are you using? I don't remember tinyMCE acting up in it except for earlier versions. It's at version 9.50 now.

could you hook me up with a test account?

I tried using my website on Opera 9.5 and I could get tinyMCE to work just fine.
