I am using 3.4.3, no matter how I add a story it comes out with centered alignment by default, is there any way to change this so it will automatically align left ?

What skin are you using? It may have something in its style.css that's causing the problem.

3 column was a 2.0 skin, did you modify it to work in 3.0?
