I had to change my host company and I backed up everything from my old host for transfer to my new host. I copied and moved all my files and my sql database. After I uploaded everything to my new host, the site seems to work just as it did. I can log in, search, make changes in admin functions as before. The only problem is that none of the stories in my archive are coming up. All the information comes up: Title, Author, Date Published, etc... there's just no story. I checked the stories folder and they ARE there, they just aren't showing up on the site. I've searched the forums for any sort of solution to my problem, but didn't find anything. Any and all help would be muchly appreciated.
My site is http://www.transfictions.net/tffics/index.php
Again, any and all help would be MUCHLY appreciated!
Thank you!
That's exactly how it is on the fake test site I made with a backup copy of my database when I purposefully didn't upload the stories folder, so I think it can't find the stories for some reason. Two easy things I suggest you check first: make sure the stories folder is CHMODed properly and also check that in the admin settings it's set to save stories to the stories folder and not the database. Also, check that in the admin settings the path to the stories folder is right (like, if the folder is 'stories', then it should say 'stories' in the settings).
Thanks for the advice. The stories folder is CHMODed to 777, and it is set in the admin settings to save stories to the stories folder. I also made sure the path was set correctly, so I'm not sure what the problems is with it. >< It's just very frustrating that everything works but the most important part of the site. *wry smile*
I've checked that, and my host has the safe-mode off. And the problem with saving stories to the database, is that I have a lot of stories on my site, and some of them are a bit long. Not to mention, I'm not quite sure what would happen to the stories already in story folder if I did that. I do appreciate the attempts at helping me though. I'm willing to entertain any and all suggestions. *wry grin*
So, I think I've narrowed down that's it not necessarily a problem with eFiction for sure, so it's probably something with your host. Unfortunately I can't think of any more possible server-related causes.
The structure of the stories folder is such that the folders in side it are numbered by author uid, and then the text files inside each of those are numbered by sid (for the first chapter - after that the following chapters are labeled by chapter id, I believe). For example, on my test site, I can access this: http://verilyviridian.com/efictiontest/stories/1/3.txt
However, on your site, when I follow the same logic and try to access any of the stories, I get 404 messages.
http://www.transfictions.net/tffics/stories/1513/11.txt (Supposed to be Captured by KiaMianara)
http://www.transfictions.net/tffics/stories/1181/969.txt (Desperation by kattan1978)
And so on. The reason I did this was to try to narrow down the problem. Are you absolutely sure that you've got the stories folder in the right place? Also, this might be nothing, but check what the folders inside the stories folder are CHMODed to.
The story folder and the folders inside it are all CHMODed to 777, just like they were on the old server. I've checked the folder contents and the stories ARE in there. I just can't figure out why even direct linking won't show them. I'm sure that the stories folder is in the right place. Everything is just like it was on my old host. I suppose all I can do now is get in touch with tech support at my new hosting and see if there's not something they can do to help. I appreciate the effort to help though. Thanks a lot.
Something similar happened to me once when I moved servers. (The second server move went smoothly.) The problem was that the stories folder AND the stories weren't CHOWNed properly. You can't access CHOWN so you'll have to get your host to check on it.
I'll check that out first thing, thanks! Any idea what they have to be set to?
No, your host will know. If they don't, you should go ahead and switch again!

Okay the stories folder and the individual author folders are set to 777 but are the stories themselves... the text files set to 644? They are on my site.

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)
Now running v.3
Not sure why it didn't occur to me to do this sooner...
But I tried to reupload one of the stories on my archive site and this is the error message it spat out at me.
Warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: No such file or directory in /home/l96ib8gd/public_html/tffics/stories.php on line 205
Warning: chmod() [function.chmod]: No such file or directory in /home/l96ib8gd/public_html/tffics/stories.php on line 206
Warning: fopen(tffics/stories/1/2279.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/l96ib8gd/public_html/tffics/stories.php on line 208
Warning: chmod() [function.chmod]: No such file or directory in /home/l96ib8gd/public_html/tffics/stories.php on line 214
Does that help with diagnosing the problem perhaps? I've no idea what all that means. The folder IS there and it IS properly CHMODed...
Thanks, all!

Maybe it's looking for /home/l96ib8gd/public_html/tffics/tffics/stories/.../....txt?

It's also possible that something is not chmodded properly.
Any idea what might not be chmodded correctly? My stories folder and the folders inside it are all chmodded 777.
