URL to your eFiction: http://archive.nsync-fiction.com
Version of eFiction: 3.4
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: no
Version of PHP: can be found out from your host: current version
Version of MySQL: can be found out from your host: current version
Have you searched for your problem: (yes/no) yes
If so, what terms did you try: spam, spam email, spambots
State the nature of your problem: Copy and paste any errors you are receiving. Some of my members are receiving links to porn websites in emails supposedly sent from my archive. Is there something I can do to block this through efiction, or do I need to ask my webhost?
Do you have a test account for us? no.
We need more information to identify the problem. Are the emails coming from the mail forms on the archive, or is someone just spoofing the archive email address.
If it's the first, something will have to be added to the contact forms to verify the user is a human. Ideally, the captpha should be added to the contact form, but I don't know how hard that mod would be, but I do have a similar authentication on email forms on my personal site that I know how to add.
If they are spoofing your email address, there really isn't anything you can do...
I think they're spoofing my email address, π‘ since I don't send out mass emails through the site. If there's something I need my users to know, I post a news blurb or send a personal email using my gmail account. I'll email the user that received the spam link and see if she can forward it to me or at least confirm what address it was sent from.
I did add enable the captpha form--now that I know what its for lol. I don't think it will help with the emails, but it will hopefully help with new users.
All emails sent from the site's forms should have a message at the end saying it was sent from your site. The emailer does some checks for spam. On some of my sites (not e-Fiction), I've got the contact forms set so links and bbcode for links (<a> and [url]) are not allowed (as that's 99% of the spam). That has cut down on the spam. I've also set it to search the message for words from the dirty words list for a couple sites as well.
Like Carissa, I would guess it's most likely a spoofed address.
I got this problem to. My email says "This message was sent to you from Disney Long Playing Stories located at http://www.disneylps.com. " at the end of it.
I get about 5 of these a day or more...
I've recently started getting these emails too. They're sent from the contact form because they have the message at the bottom.
And idea of a way to prevent it??

Champ,
Have you turned the captcha feature on in efiction? This should prevent it sending form mail through the site.

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)
Now running v.3
Yes I have captcha turned on. But it doesn't seem to appear in the contact page? I'd be open to modifying that page's code to implement it if thats what it takes.

The captcha is coded to not appear when logged in. π
