Could someone tell if it is possible to widen the story text space? There is a solution to this for version 2.0 https://efiction.org/forums/index.php?topic=2347.msg13439#msg13439 but I'm assuming that it would be different for 3.0.

With TinyMCE, there is a click and drag for the TinyMCE box. You can make it as wide as your screen can go, and as long as you want.
