Finally my host made adjustments to solve the session handling errors, set the folders to 755, and now *fingers crossed* it all seems to work.
My lesson from this - don't be scared to keep prodding your webhost for a solution. It would have been easy to give up at the first fence if it wasn't for the invaluable information here.
