I am not sure what is going on here but it is very strange.

I have having some HUGE chmod problems, although am fixing them now and suspect it is my ftp screwing up. But in trying to sort thru the mess i found a folder i coudlnt chmod.

So i went hunting for the file and found it. The user id = 63 and the story id = 5116

http://www.pretendercentre.com/missingpieces/viewstory.php?sid=5116

yet in the folder for 63, i have no 5116.txt and in fact it was 5537.txt that corresponded to that story. Which also happened to be the file that i coudlnt reset from 644 to 777. This is a new story that was uploaded on the 17th march and i am pretty sure that was after i ran the 3.2.1 upgrade.

The story seems intact and after i reuploaded it from a backup i had made, i could then successfully chmod it back to 777. So it isnt really stopping any functions in efiction, just seems to be misnumbering the folders or the id's in the database.

Story text is stored under the chapter id not the story id.  The two numbers will sometimes match up, but rarely.

Okay, that is fine then,

I just added a new chapter and checked the chmod of it and it is set to 644, not 777.

I have just spent the last 4 hours setting every single folder and file in the directory to 777. But a new chappie i just added loaded as 644, although it did let me edit it.

Could this be the script somehow or is it more likely to be a server issue, is anybody else having this problem?

thanks
jacci

folders/directories are supposed to be 777 and files are 644. Everything is as it should be, no problems.

This is for the stories folder and the files in it only

Well then, ...  πŸ˜•
some very freaky things must be going on on my server because i have had a flood of emails, i can't edit my chapter
gone in and changed the setting from 644 to 777 and it solved the problem (it was the only level that seemed to accept the editing)

Perhaps the server just had a burp or smt because i cannot figure out what the hell is going on now.

Just got a member to run a test on editing a chap and got a

Warning: fopen(stories/516/5530.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/pretende/public_html/missingpieces/stories.php on line 447.

Going to write to server and see if this is a safe mode issue.

ETA: it has to be the server I think because it is working some of the time and not others. We jsut successfully edited 4 different chapters, and then the 5th got the no no msg.

Will monitor it over the next few days and close the thread if i get no more issues. Just feared it was smt to do with changes with 3.2.1, but i suspect now that was purely conincidence.

try 664 or 666 for the files

Jacci, this is a problem with your server. Didn't you recently move servers? Because of the move, some of your files are probably CHOWNED incorrectly. This happened to me when I moved servers too. The solution was to get my host to match ownership between the new files and the old files. If this is the case with you, it should work at 666, but that is a bit of a security risk so try to get your host to correct it first.

BTW, since this is not a bug, then I'm going to move it over to general support.

It wasnt the server i moved, just installation. It has been given me chmod grief all day and i had some problems yesterday with it too. It was timing out when i tried to change things, claimed i didnt have permissions and now tonight i have had a huge amount of trouble with unable to edit chaps.

Thanks for that Carissa, i will submit a support ticket and see about the CHOWNED and see if that sorts me out.  Move the thread wherever you like or just dump it if you want since it is not really an efic prob at all, but some crazy server problem.

thanks again

Marking this now as solved. Since host fixed CHOWN, there has been no further reports of unable to edit chapters.

Thanks everyone for help here.
