Hi Everyone. πŸ™‚

My sister and I have been using efic for 2 years now with no major issues, but this baffles us.
We recently acquired another domain and we've tried to add efic to it (3.4.2) as a brand new
install. Database and everything is set up properly and such (because we're familiar with what
needs to be done).

But when we completed the install, no images showed up. None. From the review "stars" to the
the header on the "Zen" skin, nothing is there. We have deleted and reinstalled several times,
(the latest being last night) and nothing.

Thinking it could be a server issue, we spoke to a technician, who did several checks while we were
on live chat and said it wasn't a server-side problem, and that he suspected it was configuration
issue with the software. But when we installed yet another efic on a subdomain it seemed to work.

So, I guess I'm here to ask if anyone has experienced such a thing, and if so, do they have any
suggestions on how to fix it. I thought it could be something in the way the domain was set up, but
that couldn't be because the index page for the main link works.

Any help is appreciated.

URL to your eFiction: http://www.inugrrrl.net/fiction/index.php
Version of eFiction: 3.4.2
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: No
Version of PHP: 5.2.5
Version of MySQL: 4.1.22-standard
Have you searched for your problem: Doing that now.
If so, what terms did you try: Images, installing
State the nature of your problem: Explained above.
Do you have a test account for us? No, just the link to the actual site, but it's bare.

Check your local copy and see if the images are in the images folder. Then reupload them to your remote folder where the eFiction install is.

If they still don't work, check and see maybe if this domain has hotlinking protections enabled.

Also check the permissions for the images folder, and everything in it.

should have the image appear if the image is there. i'm getting this error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /fiction/images/star.gif on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.41 Server at inugrrrl.feudal-pulpfiction.net Port 80

Sounds like the permissions of the images folder are set to 0. They should be at 755 or something like that.

Thanks for the reply. πŸ™‚

I did some checking. The hotlinking block has not been added to this domain yet.
I also checked the permissions or the image folder in efic as well as all of the image
folders in the skins. All the permissions were set for 755 and all of the images are there.

The only thing I haven't tried is what is quoted below because I wasn't quite sure what
you meant. When you say local copy and remote copy, I'm not really following.
If you could explain that I would appreciate it.

And no, still no images and I'm not sure why since everything looks as it should.

Thanks.

Check your local copy and see if the images are in the images folder. Then reupload them to your remote folder where the eFiction install is.

Edit: I spoke to my server again and they said that the "code is looking for the image folder where it shouldn't", whatever that means, and they're convinced it's a software problem. I explained that I uploaded this very software to another subdomain and it worked, but he didn't really have an answer for that.

Nice try, server dudes. It's not a software problem, and it's looking for the images in the right place.

How do I know? When I click where an image should be and select  "view background image," I get a correct ur.l This one for zenlike, for example: . If you go to your skins folder and select zenlike, then images, you'l seel that image. In fact, the page thinks the images are there, but they aren't showing up because the page does not have permission to display them. If you have your permissions set correctly, then it is sadly, a server problem, or more likely, a problem with the configurations on your server.

Thanks for the reply. πŸ™‚

I had a feeling it was them. *glares evilly* because I did the same thing you did and pointed this out.
He says I can open a "ticket" so they can look at it again. He also suggested that I delete the addon domain
and reapply it, so I'm trying that next because the fact that I run efic on 4 other domains/subs except this
one is pretty telling.

Thanks for the help. When I figure this out I'll post the results in case it can help anyone else in my shoes.

So, this is the latest from the server people:

Hello,

I see that your permissions are all off. All folders should be set to 755 and all files should be set to 644. PHP will not work properly unless this is how it is set. Please make these adjustments and let us know if you are still experiencing difficulties.

Does this ring true to you guys? I compared my permissions folders with my working sites, and other than the config being on 644 (Though I am POSITIVE that I made it 666 when I installed), the numbers are not off from the prior efics installed on my domain.

It all seems very strange.

EDIT: I changed all of the permissions as they instructed and got nothing. They're really batting 1000.

Oh, and I did fix the config with a 666, but still no images. Sigh.

Permissions is what I thought.

Maybe you aren't setting them right? You have to find each file now, and all the folders, and individually set them again, even if they were right before, or are now, to be sure. Do you have a file manager in your cpanel that automatically shows the permissions next to every file and folder? That could help. Anything set to 0 needs to be changed.

Ask them to change your permissions for you if you can't.

Thanks so much for the help.

Yes, my cpanel shows the permissions, and omg....
When I checked again *everything* was set to 755. Everything.
I have no idea how or why this happened and there are like hundreds
of files.

*head spins*

I've done maybe half thus far without any change to efic at all.
I'm going to attempt to do the rest and I'll respond here and let everyone
know if that's the issue.

Again, thanks for your time. I appreciate it. πŸ™‚

Aren't they supposed to be set at 755?

If they are set to 0, that means no one can see or access the file. You don't want that.

Folders should be 755, files, 644. I don't think a file can be CHMODed to 0, but I've been wrong before.

Well, ladies, I'm back with the latest.

None of the folders were at 0. They were, however, chmodded to 755 -files and folders.

So, I experimented and did the following:

1) Deleted the addon domain and reattached it.
2) Deleted the database I was using and created a new one.
3) Deleted the folder I was using to house efic and made a new one.
4) Uploaded and successfully installed a fresh copy of efic.

End result: No images.

When I went to my file mgr inside cpanel to chmod the config.php, everything had 755 permissions,
(files and folders) and this was on a clean install of everything. I don't know what to think about
this. I then went to my link which is http://inugrrrl.net/fiction and efic was there but image-less.

This is a long shot, but can this be software related at all? The install was clean and I had no issues.
I have other add on domains running older versions of efic (3.3.1) and this didn't happen. I'm stumped
and there are like hundreds of files within files. Manually changing permissions will take hours upon hours.
I don't think I have any earlier versions of 3.0 on my computer, but I wish I did. Maybe this wouldn't be
happening and I could just upgrade.

I'm stumped and really trying to avoid the days of work involved in changing all of those permissions.

It's weird... it's like the header portion of the page doesn't load. But in CSSZen which doesn't have images it looks fine:

http://inugrrrl.net/fiction/index.php?skin=CSSZen

but in Elegance it's fine everywhere except the header: http://inugrrrl.net/fiction/index.php?skin=elegance

Exactly. CssZen looks okay, but the headers are missing and all of the permissions
are just roasted. Worse part is that after this mess I have yet another domain and fic
site to create and I can't deal with another repeat of this, especially if I have to manually
change all of those permissions. >.<

EDIT: I attempted to upload a fake story to see how it worked. The thing is moving very
slow, and I suspect it's because the permissions are off. Even using csszen to upload
and review the story, no images (like the review stars) worked, so it's not just a certain skin
thing, unfortunately.

Funny thing is, it seems that when I use 3.4.2 on a subdomain attached to my main server
account, it looks just fine. But on a separate domain it won't work.

Actually, the images load, but they don't display. Have you tried deleting everything (start with the skins folders) and reuploading it. Try reuploading the folder in a different location, too, such as ficiton2. Just don't delete your config file. Save that one. Also, try a different FTP program.

And, no, I don't think there is any way this could be software related. There is nothing in the script that would make this happen, and if it were script related, other people would have experienced this. πŸ™

We've tried different folders. We've tried two or three (with different names each time). The first couple of times we ran into issues installing. This time, however, the install was completely clean. I have 2 more folder names I can use before I'm in trouble. πŸ™‚ And I use a mac, so I don't come across many FTPs that work well, this one has been a charm, though. I doubt that's my problem because I used the same one to upload a working efic to a subdomain on my main server account. The issue seems to be this particular addon domain.

I did delete everything and reinstall clean about 2 hours ago. So I'm a little lost as to what you mean. Are you saying to delete everything in my "fiction" folder except the config and reupload into that folder or a newly named folder? Would I need to reinstall? It's been a really long 5 days, so my apologies if I'm not making sense or not understanding something that's probably pretty simple. >.<

I figured it wasn't, but I wanted to ask anyway. I think it's just one of those really bad weeks around here.
Thanks so much for the help. I appreciate it. πŸ™‚
