It's not exactly a 3.0 problem but I just want to get people's opinions. Here goes:
My laptop is dying a very slow death right now for some unknown reason. I'm trying to get files off onto my falsh drive inbetween bouts of freezing. Is it ok to zip my efiction folder (to make it smaller and take up less space)? Will having to reinstall my FTP client (i have all the log in info) mess up my site? or should it not matter since I have all the info needed to connect to my server? I just don't want my site to experience downtime becauze my computer has gone down the hole. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

have you any idea about whats up with the laptop whether its because of a virus (do a virus scan :P) or whether its the hardware itself but saying that if its freezing completely thats what happened to my old pc when my motherboard failed so thats what may be going on your laptop
as for your question I dont see any problem zipping your efiction folder to make it take less space also having to reinstall your ftp client will not mess your site up as its completely seperate from your site (it only connects and uploads/downloads files to/from your webhost) just make sure you have your login info for your server saved so you can log back in after the reinstall!
unless your server/webhost has issues then there shouldnt be any downtime because of your problem
hope that helps!

Your site shouldn't experience any downtime because your computer is dying unless you are using your laptop as a server.
re: fanfictionworld: I just ran a virus scan (after restoring my system back to Feb 6) and nothing came up (as in no viruses). I have been getting errors with the blue screen of death saying something about a KERNAL_STATE_INPAGE_ERROR and that talks about hardware/software recently installed. only thing I've recently installed was a new defrag program which i uninstalled after that messsage showed up the first time. I'm hoping I can still get my efiction and ftp client (also perhaps my paint shop pro exe) files off as well.
re: Carissa: Thanks. And no, my computer isn't be used as my server.
EDIT: So, the zip program on my computer expires so I didn't zip it. but files aren't copying over (like the en_admin.php file in languages. I still have the original zip file (already saved on my flash drive) and it's presumably on my ftp server as well. Is it ok if not all the files copy over since I have them elsewhere? (I seriously can't make the stupid thing work. It will stop partway through and say they can't find the server or disk so it can't copy the file)

looked on the microsoft site for you but I didnt find anything of interest relating to that error so im thinking you'll have to kill everything and reinstall windows to get your laptop back in working condition again! which means you'll lose all your files if you cant copy them as you say 🙁
hope that helps
as for the files youll have the active site copy thats on the server and you have the new zip file thats on the flash drive so youll proberbly be ok though I think when you get the laptop going again you should do a backup of your site via your server and it maybe worth keeping a note of the efiction databasename and username/password u use for mysql in case you or your server lose them and need to restore them (this is what I've done)

Well I'm getting a new laptop so I'll be reinstalling everything on that. My hosting service has all the database log in info on it when i log in to the main server. And i think it was just the en_admin.php file in languages and maybe a couple files in one of the tinymice folders which i will fix once i get my new laptop up and running. This week just sucks!

You should be able to download your site (the files) onto any computer. You don't need to save the files from your old computer, but it's a good backup. So don't really worry about it that much. As long as you don't delete the files online (or something bad happens to them) you should be able to just download them from your site with any FTP program, as long as you have the right connection information.
And if you did not change the eFiction files in any way, they are just the same files found in the zip you downloaded here on the site
except for the config information. If that's the case, the only thing that you might have different than the original zip on this site are the config file and if you save stories as files those are created custom to your archive.
Whoever said nothing is impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

Thanks! I just hope things work once I put them on the new machine. Consider this "solved".

If you want a free zip program that doesn't expire try IZarc.
It can zip and unzip all sort of file formats like .rar, .ace, and others.

Thanks barb but I have the files 9minus the few pesky ones that refused to copy) on my flash drive now. I don't want to upset my laptop any more than I have to. I'm just waiting on my other flash drive to arrive so i can put on iTunes and I'll be all set.
