When I was performing the upgrade on my live site, I forgot that I'd CHMODed config.php from 666 to 644 for security. Needless to say, when I got to the point where the script writes to config.php I had a problem. When I tried to redo step 2 after changing the permissions, I received an error so bad I had to restore my database from backup and start over from the beginning.

The point of all of that is this: I think you should include a note for the upgraders in the readme to make sure that config.php is CHMODed to 666 before they start the upgrade. It would definitely prevent problems.

Note added to the readme file.  Good idea.
