URL to your eFiction:  http://www.tokiohotelfiction.com
Version of eFiction:  3.4.2
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: no
Version of PHP: 5
Have you searched for your problem: yes
If so, what terms did you try: sleeping mysql connection
State the nature of your problem:

We were having huge issues with our last server, Hostmonster. It was a shared server and we were constantly crashing their server. They finally suspended our site and refused to really explain to us why. We'd had many, many problems so we finally decided to move servers.

We are now on Nexcess, which actually claims to specialize in hosting Efiction sites. They've been amazing so far, but I got this email today. Just like Hostmonster, we are basically mangling their server.

This is the email I was sent:

Arianne,

I'm noticing that there are a lot of sleeping mysql connections that accumulate from your site over time. This would indicate that somewhere MySQL connections aren't being closed properly. This can cause problems if all the MySQL connections are used up by these sleeping connections. If you could have your web master look over the code on your site and make sure any mysql connections getting opened up are also being closed properly, that would be great.

If you could look through the settings in efiction and see if there's a "Persistant Connection" setting or something similar and turn it off if it's on, that would also  be a good start.

The faster the better. It's actually causing issues on the server with your site and other clients sites loading. Thanks.

I have no idea how to fix any of this and our web admin is MIA at the moment. I am not even sure if he'd know how to fix this problem, either.

So... does anyone know how to go about fixing these sleeping connections and know why they're happening? I think we'll have to shut our site down again if we don't fix it soon, so I'm quite worried.

Are you using your database to store your site stories? If so maybe if you switched to having them stored on your server it may fix up the problem. That's my only suggestion πŸ™ Wish I could be of more help.

No, we don't have them stored on the database.  😳

Thank you for the suggestion, though. I hope we can figure this out before it becomes too big of a problem.

Our webhost has claimed to fix the problem, HOW, I am not sure. But the site is running smoothly now and if they're happy, I'm happy.

eFiction doesn't use persistent connections at all. SMF has this option, I know.  Did you bridge your site?

Just following up on this...

Our site isn't bridged and our server said it was a problem with efiction, however, since I know nothing about this type of stuff, I didn't know at the time that efiction doesn't use persistent connections so I just took their word for it. Whatever was happening isn't happening anymore, so I am not going to question it. πŸ˜‰
