First I want to say how happy I am with this software!
I will be creating at least one community with it, I know-- and then I'll want pretty much all the bells and whistles that 3.3.1 offers.
But right now, I am experimenting with it to make my own, solo fiction archive, and I've gotten a long way with it;
http://stellaomega.com/the-road/index.php
In doing so, I've modified the skin to remove community features, but there are some things that I will have to edit in the php files themselves. I know just enough php to get myself in trouble! I am going carefully-- in fact, I will load a second efiction directory, so that I can do my site-breaking away from public view π
The thing is, I know of three more people right this minute, who would love to have a simple way to get their own work onto their own website. And I would be more than willing to share any modified files-- if I could say that they were good, you know.
Some of the things I would like to change;
At the moment, any of the browsing options gives you a list of story titles in the story block format. Then when you click on a story, you get the same story block format on a new page. If there are chapters, it offers you a list of clickable chapters. If it's a complete story in one page, it still has a clickable link titled "chapter 1"
I would like to get rid of that middle page, and go straight to the story-- or the first chapter of the story, with the notes above it.
Can someone help me do that? Should i start with an earlier version?
You can do that in 3.3.1.
There are two places to set it. In each member's personal preferences, and also in the admin preferences for the whole site.
For whole site:
Admin - Settings - Display Settings - Use Story Index: Yes/No
Individual Members:
Account Info - Edit Preferences - Display table of contents for stories: Check/Uncheck

Fabulous! Sooo easy...
I guess I'll be putting these together into a section for the user's manual. This is the cleanest code, too.
I've been using OSCommerce for a while-- like wading through mud!
Next question... How do I put the skinchange block onto the admin page, so that I can remove it from the rest of the site?
Since this is no longer a New Feature suggestion, I will be moving it to the appropriate forum.
You really need to go look through the admin settings. The skin is controlled from the same point Jan already pointed you to. Except it's "Site Information" rather than "Display Setings". It's also in the instructions for posting a help request to go look through the settings first.

I've been going through the settings for four five days now.... And the skinning tutorials, as well. I kinda expected the skin default to be in the skin admin link π
The thing is-- I'm going to be installing this for some very un-techy people who are going to be asking me much dumber questions than I'm asking here. I'm taking notes as I go so I'll be able to answer them...
Plus, I'm much more used to scripts that don't work very well, and and this one works very well indeed. I keep expecting bugs that simply aren't there! (can't find a roses smiley to offer you)
My advice to you, is to play around with the archive, look at what all the links in the admin panel do. Don't change anything unless you know what it does though. Read all the topics in the forums in 3.0 General support, and skinning support, and the readme's and docs that come with the download. You should be well versed in what the archive can do then, and be able to help whoever you are helping. π

I just thought I would mention that you have a nice little skin there. It is nicely colored, is not extremely complicated with bright color patterns, and the colors are nicely matched to the header. The only thing that I thought I would mention is that the header is rather blurry and it's hard to read the text on it.
I know of several authors that has used Efiction like this. I think it's great when new people find great uses for a good program. π
Current Version: 3.4.2
PHP 4

Thank you for the kind words! π I'll take another look at the header image.
Among the changes I have made;
There are only two links in the main menu; "home" and "Browse all titles" since my output is small enough that its not unreasonable to do so. I almost took out the sort dropdowns, but they are so cute! And, as it turns out, practical. Really, the more I mess around with this program the more impressed I am with it. BIG KUDOS!
I've put links to all of the accounts functions onto the admin page. A solo author doesn't need that separation. The admin main menu looks like this;
Add New Story | Manage Stories | Add New Series | Manage Series | Manage Images
Review Response | Reviews Received | News | Custom Pages | Page Links | Skins
Categories | Ratings | Classifications | Members | Mail Users
Panels | Settings | Blocks | Admin Manual | Archive Maintenance
The archive maintenance page now contains;
* Recalculate Reviews
* Fix Category Counts
* Fix Category Order
* Re-calculate Site Statistics
* Fix Panel Order
* Optimize Database Tables
* Backup Database
* Run Update
* View PHP info
* Version Check
* View Action Log
* Edit Preferences
