Ok, I hope I can explain this in a way that actually makes sense.
I already have efiction v3 installed and running fine by itself but I was never able to get the bridge with SMF working without some major bugs going on my test site. So now my question is this... I still need SMF on the site and have come to terms with having them as seperate log ins but now I'm curious to know if, when I install SMF on my main site, I should have efiction and the forum share the same SQL database on the off chance I'm able to bridge them "down the road."
I'm not gonna attempt the bridge any time soon but I could see wanting to if ever I could get a working bridge going. From what I've heard the only way this would even be possible would be to have the forum and the site share the same database from the get go right?
It is easier to have them sharing the same database for them to be bridged, yes. However with the current bridge, yes they should be in the same database. It is possible though that they can be bridged with two different databases (this is not the current situation, but it can be done just to let you know). So say if a third party author decides to make a bridge, in theory s/he can use two separate databases. I have seen it done, and like I said in theory it can be done.
As for keeping them in two separate databases, you can always export the info from one and import it into another as long as you have seperate prefixes (i.e. smf_) that way they don't overwrite each other.
Hope this helps.
