Hey all. I'll fill out the support request template but this isn't really a buggy type issue. Basically, we just got an email from our host telling us that we're using too many resources to stay on a shared hosting plan (this is for dracoandginny.com). They gave me a log of some kind which is saying that the big culprits are browse.php and viewstory.php. From that I gather that it's probably not something we can help, but I have to ask: is there any way to streamline this so that it's not using so much CPU and memory? (Actually that's about the only part of this log I could make out, as it has terrible formatting and doesn't tell me what all these numbers are supposed to mean.) Part of the English says this:

"Please note that the acceptable usage range for shuttle and voyager plans is 1.0% average %CPU or less, 1.0% average %Memory or less and Top Processes below 20%. Currently, your usage far exceeds this range at CPU usages paste here 4."

"paste here 4": charming. You'd think they could at least make an email that made sense and/or included all the information the proper way. *eyeroll* Anyway, at the beginning of the email they said this: "A detail of the problem is shown below as: CPU: 1.32 % Memory: 2.06 % Mysql: 0.8 %"

So in other words, we're using 1.32% CPU with 1% allowed, and 2.06% memory with 1% allowed. The top processes they listed (browse.php and viewstory.php) were below the 20%, but browse was at 16% (unless this was meant to be cumulative, I'll have to ask).

Currently this site includes more than just an eFiction install, and I'm thinking maybe of shutting down the other branches (SMF forums, art gallery, podcasting, and a secondary eFiction install used for recs) temporarily.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of shared hosts that are more lenient about the CPU/memory usage, I would love to know!

A lot of hosting company AUPs aren't really made clear which bugs me a little. Holdfire's is here though (my host) and Surpass Hosting has one that you might like... (Except for the e-mail business!) Generally, you need to look somewhere that doesn't oversell/share. =/ Which is hard these days...

Honestly, with a site as big as yours, you're probably going to need a VPS. Most shared hosts will shut you down even if you just have a burst of traffic (just ask me how I know.) You might be able to get away with what some hosts call 'business class' which has bigger allowances, but of course you'll have to pay more.

We did hire someone to go through and try to streamline everything and they really couldn't do anything for eFiction as it was currently written.

Skins made by Kali are no longer supported!

I second Kali's suggestion, and I would definitely check the market for a decent managed VPS.

Looks like you're switching servers so I guess you went the VPS option.  I'll suggest this for those following.  If you turn off co-author's you'll save some resources. You can also save a bit of resources by turning off the breadcrumbs for categories in the story blocks.

By the way if you're still looking in the marketplace for an affordable VPS, I found two good options.
Virpus and VPSRight. They both specialize in VPS's and so far VPSRight has done a great job, Virpus is good with support, however I switched to VPSRight because it's more affordable for me. Right now I'm paying about $24/month for a decent size VPS that hosts my sites and my hostees (lots of eFic archives)

Also a good place to look for deals/specials:

Just be careful in choosing because sometimes they're only offering special prices on unmanaged VPS's, and I went down that route and tried to do everything myself and it's way too much of a hassle.
