URL to your eFiction: http://www.gallifreyandreams.com/index.php
Version of eFiction: 3.5
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: No
Version of PHP: 5
Version of MySQL: 2.11.9.3
Have you searched for your problem: Yes
If so, what terms did you try: Series, series errors, table of contents, manage stories
State the nature of your problem: Error! We encountered an error. Please go back and try again.
Do you have a test account for us?Yes. http://www.gallifreyandreams.com/viewuser.php?uid=14

  • We have several problems actually. The first being that when doing an advanced search of fics, the results show a link for the Series it finds, listed at the top of the page, but when you click on it, it gives an error. Error! We encountered an error. Please go back and try again. Occasionally, depending on the search parameters, it'll add a link to the files it found, but still gives the message at the top of the page.
  • Another problem is that we'd like members to be able to simply click the title of the fic to take them to the actual story page, rather than the table of contents. It's an unnecessary and complicated step, because there are three places to click for each fic, and you have to scroll down to the chapter title--even if the fic only has one chapter--in order to get to the story.

I tried the fix I found on here and it did nothing. I changed it in Admin, and in my personal preferences, then did the file editing suggested and still it takes members to the table of contents page.

  • Lastly, when an author goes to his/her Manage Stories pages, the numbers for views, reviews, and validation are all squished up against the options, instead of lined neatly under their respective sections. When he/she clicks on View Chapters they're better, but still not completely lined up, except for the stories with chapters.

I've been modifying the site with help from this forum, and other things I've figured out on my own. I'm really not php-inclined at all, so, please don't toss out the lingo and expect me to understand. I'm a newbie. Thank you. πŸ™‚

For you 2nd issue of showing the story index. If you don't want your readers to have to see a story index, just log in as Admin
Click on Settings
Click on Display Settings
Where it says Use story index choose No
Click Submit.

The users in their own settings can turn off story index by going to Edit Preferences
And unchecking Display Table of contents for stories

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)

Okay, so first thing, I tried reproducing the things you mention.

1. I was able to reproduce this, to my surprise, on my site with 3.4.3.  I did a search, which said at the top "Other Results: 9 Series." Then it puts me to a page that gives the error warning and says "Other Results: 16 Series."  When I click that link, it shows me 16 series, and it seems to have picked the ones that match the criteria.  I can't explain the difference in the numbers.

2. This isn't an issue for me.  My test site is at 3.5, and once I turn off the story index in my profile, it's fine.  The stories don't go to the story index, regardless of whether my main site setting is set to it or not.  I did, however, turn it off and you can see it here: http://efictiontest.verilyviridian.com/browse.php?type=categories&catid=1  Maybe you should double check that your database is being updated properly when you attempt to change the settings, if you're positive that you've made the right selections.  We've seen some problems with that before for the settings table.

3. I think this is a skinning issue.  At least, I don't have any problem at my site, but let me look into it.

I tried that. I mentioned it in my post. It didn't work. Didn't turn it off at all, for anyone. I changed in my personal Preferences as well, and it still doesn't work. That's why I posted here, because I'm at a loss as to how to fix it.  πŸ™

That's what it does for me. A lot of times, though, clicking on the link only shows the error and no other link to the series or anything else. I saw that someone else on the forum posted about this last September, but no one answered his/her questions.

2. I'll try that, thank you. πŸ™‚

Okay, thank you. I'll check the skinning forums in the meantime.

Re #3: I think that the fact that it's in tables is defined in the PHP files, but there is some variance in the style that can be defined by the skins.
