Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place, and my general ignorance. I've been using eFiction for about 3 or 4 years, but I still don't really know what I"m doing. π
Is there a way to add characters or pairings as a field to the stories, so that folks can search by either one or the other? I have a help ticket in with my website provider to see how much it would cost to develop this enhanced functionality, but I figured I should post here and ask the experts first, as who knows what they'll do to the site.
I was thinking the Pairings option would work like Categories or Characters, in that the Admin defines them/adds them, and then the users can select them when posting a story.
We're developing three separate archives (we know there was a way to use just one databse with table prefixes but we had no idea how to do this and got errors during installation when we attempted it), and we'll also be having them build a grand search engine that can look through all three databases and bring back a return. Any thoughts on whether this will be possible would be welcome. Otherwise I'll probably just be throwing money at them until they can do it for us. If someone here can do it, we'd pay you, by the way.
I don't know what's involved, but I wonder if someone could give me a rough idea.
These ideas have probably already been thought of and the such, but in case they haven't ...
(a) For the pairings, you could either use calash's tag function? Or perhaps think of all the possible pairings and make a new classification for them; which is "kind of" what the categories and characters are. If you use the tag function it's more flexible for your users but with that flexibility comes the ability to add "invalid" tags. Classifications are run by the admins.
(b) For the search, probably possible. I suppose all it would be would be running through three separate databases ... may cause a strain/too many queries but I think it'd be relatively possible?

I never really used the classifications function, because I don't understand it. Let me go play with it. So then the question is if the search engine can be expanded to search for those new pairing classifications, rather than just by title, author or summary.
Classifications encompass Genres, Warnings... maybe characters... and whatever else you want to include. I use Time line on my site as well. Basically, you can make a main classification, and then have a list of selectable things under it..

Ah, I get it. I created classifications for warnings and pairings, very usefu. Now I just hope I can make the search engine include pairings the search.
The search engine automatically includes all classifications in the advanced search.
Yes, Tammy's code is awesome like that. π
