Have you searched for your problem: Yes
If so, what terms did you try: assign("welcome", php not loading, front page not loading, coding showing up, code shows up
State the nature of your problem:
Whenever I go to load my website, instead of the site loading, a download pop-up appears asking if I want to open or save as a php file. If you click open using firefox, the coding shows up. The site was working fine last night around midnight and I have not made any changes besides editing a few .tpl files in my custom skin. All I did with these files was add a link to a topsite I joined, something that I've done before and never had a problem with. Other than that, I haven't modified anything since last night when the site was working.
I think you need to check your files. It sounds like someone has hacked your site. It should never try to want to "download" anything. And I sure wouldn't OPEN the download. IE7 automatically blocks anything from coming through; Firefox gives you the option of downloading.

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)
Now running v.3
I opened the download and it's the correct and complete php file for index.php which probably means that you need to contact your host. I think php support has been turned off on your server or is down.
My host's server apparently had a DDOS attack and the server is down and they are currently fixing the problem. I didn't hear this news earlier, just checked in on it. Thanks!
Well, the server was apparently fixed, but the site's still not working in Firefox... hopefully, my host can help with this... =/
