This is going to be a fairly long post.

The problem:
My computer crashed several times, and I had to get a new one, so I lost everything on that hard drive.

My host moved services and somehow the Repo! archive sort of vanished. I'm re-doing it on another domain, and I have a .sql file with most of the old information, but it also has skins and things. I honestly don't remember if this was backed up via PHPMyAdmin by my old host, or Efic's backup option.

I don't have those skins anymore, if I dump the .SQL file into my database, will it break anything? Or would it magically fix everything?

If you want the data from the archive (stories, authors, users), you'll have to use the SQL file and then fix any errors you run into.  Do you know what version of eFiction the archive was running on?  You'll have to make sure the files you install match the database.

But which version of eFiction? 2 or 3? With 3, it's fairly simple to upload the latest copy of the files with the database copy you have, then run the upgrade. With 2 you'd have to have a copy of the files for 2; plus I think a lot of the settings were saved in a config.php file. The biggest issue is usually if you have the story text saved in a folder. If you don't have a backup of that, then you've lost all the story text.

Having users with non-existing skins selected in their profiles makes no difference at all. I have hundreds or thousands of users who have old skins from v 1.1 and 2 of the script selected as their defaults. All that happens is the site displays the site default instead.

It was 3.x, 3.4.2 I think.

So, I could just import that .sql file then?

If the story texts were saved in the sql.  Otherwise, you've lost all the chapter texts.

They were saved as files.
Damn. Oh well. Not worth it then. The Repo! community is fairly small, so I'm sure my members will return on their own.
Thanks.
