I have installed a piece of software that will hopefully cut down on the number of spam members. If you've been paying attention, you'll notice we're down about 3,000 members. I've been going through and deleting spam accounts as well as accounts that have never been used. I still have about 30 pages to go so we're likely to be down more than 500 more accounts.
Of course, determining if an account is spam or not is unscientific at best, so if you are trying to log in and can't, it's possible I deleted your account. Just reregister or let me know.
Sorry if this is off topic, but what's the piece of software you used? I'm interested for SMF forums that I manage.
It's actually an SMF mod located here: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1519
Babaca recommended it. Hopefully it will work.
Hm...I'm not sure it's working.
I've tried this mod too Carissa and it doesn't do anything that you can necessarily notice (at least for me). Are spam accounts still getting through?
This is the mod that did work for me. It checks the spam accounts through the same spam database. It could have also and possibly still save you time because it can check the current existing members as well.
I can't tell if people are getting through. Maybe I missed some from yesterday but it seems like the numbers are still increasing quickly. I finished removing all the ones that seemed like spam and we're down to 1,132 members from almost 5,000 yesterday but I also deleted people who had been members for more than 6 months to a year and had never posted. I'll keep an eye on it...
The one I use reduced the amount of spammers from getting accounts. Since I've installed it I've only gained users with legit ip addresses.
