URL to your eFiction: http://www.libraryofmoria.com/a/
Version of eFiction: 3.5
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: No
Version of PHP: 4.4.7
Version of MySQL: 4.0.27
Have you searched for your problem: Yes
If so, what terms did you try: php4 to php5, change php version
State the nature of your problem: It's not really a problem but I would like to hear other people's opinions... I'm currently running my archive on PHP4 but I saw at the control panel that it could be changed to PHP5. It sounds like something very tricky, so I was wondering if I should do it, what would be the advantages, or if it's a big no no that will completely mess up my archive (especially because I don't know PHP and wouldn't be able to fix things). Any opinions are welcome.
Do you have a test account for us? Yes, the 'test' account that eFiction creates ( http://www.libraryofmoria.com/a/viewuser.php?uid=153).
I had a similar question not that long ago
https://efiction.org/forums/index.php?topic=6695.0
eFiction handles it fine. I had issues with my vBulletin bridge, however I was able to work them out mostly.
How complex the change is will depend on how your host set things up. Usually it is just a single line added to the .htaccess file, so it is easy to test and remove.
I did a whois check to see who your host is: http://www.melbourneit.com and looked around on how to change your PHP version or if you have the proper access to upgrade.
Assuming that you have the Unix Starter Web Hosting from them, it says that PHP5 is available, so it should be changeable from your Control Panel. It doesn't look like your host provdes SSH support so I don't think it's possible for you to change it manually. So if they offer it through their Control Panel, I'm assuming it's automated and shouldn't be too complicated.
Also, if you happen to be paying the $15.97 per month for starter hosted (and only 200MB), I personally feel that you're being cheated. That's really expensive for that little bit of web space and services.
I just enabled PHP 5 on the server where I do testing. I've got two or three eFiction installs there and I didn't notice any differences.
Ditto on what Becca said. You can get really good basic hosting for $5-$10/month (USD). Unless that melbourne means you're in Australia, in which case the price might be okay since I know the exchange favors USD.
Thanks for the answers. I'll try it out then.
No, I'm not on melbourneit.com, but thanks anyway...
My webhost informed me that my SQL and PHP would both being upgraded. My site seems to be working fine.
