URL to your eFiction: http://drfa.seventh-star.net
Have you searched for your problem: yes
If so, what terms did you try: header, header code
State the nature of your problem: On SOME of the admin.php?action= pages, there is a mysterious bit of code: ad>, ead>, or just  d>, but it varies depending on the page. Not all admin.php pages have it; I have yet to see it on any other pages, like for Series and so forth. I thought it was some HTML that was, for some reason, not "closed" properly when it was called, but when I did a search for it in the pages included in admin.php, I only found what looked to be proper coding for the HEAD code.

  • I see d> when I go to "Classifications"
  • I see ad> when I click on "Admin" to go to the general Admin panel, or go to "Custom Pages," "PHP Info," "Modules," "Featured Stories," "Skins," "Version Check," or "Action Log"
  • I see ead> when I click on "Panels", "Settings," "Page Links," "Profile Information," "Archive Maintenance," "Members," or "Mail Users," "News," or "Admin Manual," "Blocks"
  • "Admins,"  "Ratings," "Submissions," and "Characters" have nothing out of the ordinary displayed before the header

I've also seen the full BODY tag (both angle brackets) when logging in, so this seems to be affecting whatever user.php includes as well.

Do you have a test account for us? Not with admin access, which is what this error is apparently tied to, since I'm not seeing it on any other non-admin pages, but I could be wrong.

Is there any way to find out just what page and line of code is typed incorrectly (I assume) so that this code is popping up partially and at random on the admin pages?

If you feel comfortable, you can PM an admin account login, and I'll look.

I've checked in FF, IE, and Chrome.  I don't see anything on top of any of these pages in any of the skins.  Did you get this fixed?

No, I didn't.
I don't know whether it makes a difference that the Test Admin is a Level 2, not a Level 1. But it may be specific to the different skins; on the Characters admin panel, the tag that appeared before the header was different depending on the skin I used. In CSSZen, it was ead>, but in Elegance, it was just the >, and in Zenlike, it didn't show up at all.

Well if you want to make that test admin a level one for a day, I'll check again.

Wait... I just read the original message again...you see it on PHP Info?  It's something in your header then.

I'm looking at header.php, and I can't spot anything readily out of the ordinary, but then again, the slightest single quote or semi-colon could be causing the whole thing.

The only part I see with HEAD tags is this:

echo _DOCTYPE."<html><head>";

and at the end, this:

echo "</head>";

Of course, maybe it's something prior to those lines that's causing the HEAD tags to display?

That said, I just went through and checked all the Admin Panels again, and now...everything looks fine. Even TinyMCE appears to be displaying properly (except for the Story Edit pages, where I have to uncheck the box to get it to show up). Was there a change made?

No there weren't any changes that I can find.  I'm also still not seeing what you're seeing in either FF or IE.  That leads me to suspect it's something on your end.  Do you have some sort of plugin installed on your browser that could be causing it?

Google Gears is the only plugin I could think of; unlike FF, I haven't found Safari to be very customizable, so I haven't done much with it. I'm only using it because Firefox 3.5.1 is a CPU-sucker.

Here's a shot in the dark.  Go to the page where you're seeing the partial html.  Do a view source.  Copy and paste it into the wc3 validator and see what comes up.

Well, I don't know what happened, but I've gone back to all of the pages I saw the partial HTML on and have had no problems. I wonder if maybe it was a browser issue? Safari did recently update along with my OS (OS 10.5.8 came packaged with Safari 4.0.2), so it could have been a Webkit thing, I guess.
