Right. This is just an idea of mine. Tell me if it's viable.

How about some sort of a module or modification for making a site Invitation Only. It may sound counter-intuitive when most people would want as many members as possible, but what if someone wanted an exclusive site, but didn't really wanted to manage membership requests? Or perhaps if the content is not for general audience like adult content fics or maybe secret society fics!  πŸ˜€

I've been throwing ideas at myself all day and I've gathered some functionalities I'd love to have in such a mod. Mind you, it's been quite a while since I touched either PHP or MySQL, and I haven't spent enough time with Templates to be halfway proficient on it.
Here's what I've thought:
- Show your remaining invitations
- Show the member who invited you
- Show members you've invited
This will apparently require some new columns in the authors table (invites and invitedby)

It can also be used to control new member flow. When you send someone an invitation, your invites will be negated by one. When that someone joins, you regain that invite, and that member receives none (at first).
Member validation involves the invited member submitting a story and getting that story validated. Once the invited become a valid author, you as the inviter gain another invite and that member receives an optional value (I'm thinking 3 as default.)

I've also been thinking about what to do with the invites if the invited member resigns or deleted by the admins. The 'invited by' chain will break. So rather than doing it the hard way and changing the delete function to ticking a deleted column at the authors table, the lock account function would have to do.

Or, maybe there's an entirely different and even better way of making an eFiction site exclusive? Thoughts? Should this be moved to General Discussions?

Cheers,
SQ

No don't move this to general discussion.  You're discussing a highly specialized mod.  It belongs in the mod forum.

Sounds like an interesting idea.  Also sounds like a lot of frustrating work.  You'd have to hack fairly deeply into things to make this work I think.

My only advice would be to use the _authorinfo table for your invites and invited by rather than the _author table.

That's probably only a good idea for secret archives with something like a yahoo group that is associated with it, a way to find new members to invite.

Skyehawk uses an invitation membership only. It exists, and on a large scale. What happens is that everyone joins anyway, except for a ton of people hanging out on the forums...

Heh, I love hacking other people's apps to suit my needs. Beats making one on my own any day πŸ˜€ Now all I have to do is refamiliarize myself with Apache, PHP and MySQL and slap myself silly with Templates, and I'm all set.

_authorinfo...so like having an authorfield? Should I add a record in _authorfields too? But wouldn't it be editable by the member? Or, if it's hidden, is it still 'active' as in it can still be used by the scripts? I suppose it can, but...why?
I think that because the invites and invited by are author-specific, like lastmod (kudos to Lazuli) I should put it in the _authors table.

πŸ˜€ Which is why I'd probably shy away from forums for now. Or maybe the yahoogroups can be the bar where everyone mingle, but the site will be the exclusive 'back room' where people...mingle closer  πŸ˜€ Can you link me to this Skyehawk site? A running site should give me an idea on what to expect.

Thanks, guys, er, gals.

Cheers,
SQ
