Hey,

I'd like to know whether it's possible to ban certain usernames, a bit like the badword-filter. It's slightly unnerving (in my opinion) when people tend to chose almost similar usernames (in my case: LizzieDarcy, LizzieDarcy17, LizzyDarcy etc.). It's a bit confusing when the usernames resemble each other. In the past I've e-mailed new users and asked them kindly to come up with a new username as the one they've chosen already existed in some way and "First come, first served"
So is it possible to come up with a username-filter, where I for example have to type in *liz* and all names like "Lizzy" and "Elizabeth" etc. are banned?

Thanks a lot!

Wouldn't what you are suggesting ban people with that name already?

In my experience, people tend to come up with a similar name when their first account wasn't able to be accessed because of an e-mail company blocking e-mails from the site, or something. Maybe you should double check and make sure that they are not the same person.

Whoever said nothing is impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

No, the people who have that name already should be allowed to keep it. Just the persons who register a new account should get some message like "The username you have chosen was banned. Please chose another one."
I do run a forum where we had the same "problem" until we found out that phpbb3 allows to ban certain usernames while the old members can keep them (that's where I got the idea from).

I of course make sure that this isn't the same person registering again with a slightly different username. It's just the case that a lot of people come up with a variation of the "heroine's" name for whatever reason (the above-mentioned Lizzy Darcy is the main character at my site). Perhaps I should simply ask them to be a bit more creative when chosing their name πŸ˜€

Well I wouldn't advise banning on something as common as "liz", but if you want to do it you could copy the find_naughty function in corefunctions.php and feed it a different list of words.  Then check for it in editbio.php.  The specifics you'll have to figure out on your own.
