I don't know if i am repeating a topic, I apologize if i am. My question is, is there a way to make reviews mandatory? Like, before the reader goes to another chapter they HAVE to write a review before moving on? I have a story with like 8 reviews but like 300 reads....i doubt that those 7 or 8 people that reviewed the story read it over 300 times. That just tells me that other members are being lazy. I received more than one emails from authors asking me about it.
as its not possible by default this would require someone to make a mod to do what you want

You can try and encourage readers to leave reviews. I would give you examples, but as I can't view your site and the chapter content page, I can't really give examples.
I have a review box at the bottom of every chapter, though. And you can move the Previous and Next chapter links to under the review box.

I have the review box under every chapter too, but they still don't leave reviews. π I wish i didn't have this problem. It would make it so much better for the authors who write and submit stories.
Thanks guys for helping.
Of course it will draw more authors to your archive if they know that they'll receive a fair numbers of reviews there (at least that's the reason authors always give for posting on ff.net). But you have to see the other side, too. Some readers are too shy to leave reviews, they don't have anything to say, they don't have the time or they simply don't care. I think you have to accept that instead of forcing them - I for one would surely go elsewhere if someone would patronize me like this. I try to be a good reviewer, but sometimes I don't have anything to say. It's as simple as that.

True, well my site wouldn't be for those who are to 'shy' to leave a review. And I doubt that out of300+ reads only 8 people were brave enough to leave a review. The way I see it is, im taking care of the authors, because if we don't have the authors, the ones who are to 'shy' to write and review and the ones who aren't, would have nothing to read. But thanks for replying. π

yeah I thought about this point too if reviews are required and users dont have anything to say then it may just encourage more of them to spam instead π

You have to service your readers too, otherwise, having authors means nothing. Also, as has been alluded to above, numerous reviews doesn't mean the reviews are worthwhile. People will probably write meaningless reviews along the lines of "Next chapter please!" which, to me, would be more annoying than not getting any reviews. *shrugs* If you feel requiring reviews is the best way to run your archive, then that's fine. I just know I wouldn't visit an archive where my decision on whether or not to review were removed...
I have 13 authors and 11 of them have sent me emails asking me about the reads and reviews. Most them them want them to just say 'something' period. I don't think it would matter to them what the user wrote as long as it was something. Actually because we were in forums first, that's what they mostly got before, was 'great add, next chapter please', So i don't think they expect a paragraph review from each person that reads their work. Thanks for replying. π
After reading this I just have to say; the ratio of reads to reviews you're getting is actually common. In my own archive my story got 12,000 hits in like 2 weeks and one review. On harrypotterfanfiction.com I had the #1 most popular story for 4 years, people review freely there but, when I removed my account, that story had 300,000 hits and only about 1200 reviews. (many were from the same readers who commented multiple times) If you think about the numbers, you actually have a good number of reviews in relation to hits. Yes, it's frustrating when you want feedback - I know very well - but we have to accept it if someone declines to comment. I have to agree, I would not go to a site where I was forced to review.
Anyway, good luck with the story!

Don't forget that a lot of the hits are from computers and bots, as well. A LOT.

I have the same problems, the numbers of reviews descend permanently but I don't want to force my members to write them.
Can we not add "a gentle reminder" so to speak. We do have these "Warning Pop-Ups" for storys with adult content that appear when people try to access the story. Would it be possible to add such a pop-up with a message like "BTW Authors love comments" when you want to go to the next chapter??

That would probably be a bad idea, and just annoy your readers. The best thing to do is to make the review box at the bottom more attractive and visible. You can post "Please Review!" or something like that in really big, bold letters, maybe even make them a different color. All you have to do it edit the view story .tpl for the skin you want it to be on.

I have to agree with that, too. Anything that pops up is annoying to begin with, it would come across as - well - nagging I guess. Everyone basically knows they are expected to leave a comment. The best thing to do is make the review box highly visible, a focal point, make it highly accessible and hope for the best. Put a big neon sign graphic with a blinking arrow over the review box if you must, but drawing people to the box is really all you can do.
If reviews were required you'd have tons of this: ejfbdjfbdjhfbjhbf π
