I am wondering if it is possible to make my archive internet filter (i.e. Net Nanny) compliant. I intend to allow adult content, but want to do my best to keep the kiddies out.
I'm not really familiar with the kid-safe software filters, but I downloaded one (ContentProtect - it was the highest rated and had a free trial) to test, and it doesn't seem to be working.
While I don't actually have any adult content in the archive yet, I have two stories rated as such (an R and NC-17), complete with fake warnings of sexually explicit content and violence. Both also have functioning JavaScript pop-ups mentioning the rating and requiring age consent validation. (I thought for sure that would trigger the filter!)
But despite all that, the ContentProtect software just lets me go in and read the story. π

You have your NC-17 story set to only be read by members, so when I click on it and say OK it asks me to log in, however your R rated story isn't set as such so clicking OK to that pop up lets me read the story. If you don't want folks reading the R rated stuff just set it to members only also.
The only other thing I can think of is adding meta tags to your index page, which I see that you did. But you could add the tag:
<meta NAME="RATING" CONTENT="Mature">

Yes, that's how I'd like it to work. In a perfect world, that should be sufficient. I just want to make sure that the content filters like Net Nanny work as well, for the over-protective parents who don't trust their kids (and the kids that can't be trusted).

Hmm. I didn't add any meta tags to the index page - those must be an out of the box feature.
Adding additional rating tags to each story automatically would probably do the trick though. Is that possible? For instance, any story uploaded and rated 'M' gets the above mentioned rating meta tag automatically.
Oh, and I just flipped to the fictionratings.com rating system a few minutes ago, if anyone happens to get confused by that.
There is no way for the script to automatically add meta tags given a certain rating. You could probably make it do that with a bit of work. I don't know anything really about filtering software, so I can't be much more help...

I'm certainly not opposed to MODing the code, but someone would have to show me how to do it. My PHP and MySQL skills aren't all that impressive. I can read it and make minor edits, but not major MODs.

Yeah, that's my problem too. No kids, and I trust myself just fine. π
Since it sounds like you would like to create or have someone help with creating a mod, you should post a message in the 3.0 Mod Discussion and Help section. Good luck.

Sorry to add something so belatedly...I just stumbled upon it on my way to look for an answer to a problem I had.
~)~
I went to a site that I knew had registered with the safety software sites and made a list of everyone they'd registered with, then went to the company sites and made a note of their registration links (or asked how to register, in a couple of cases).
I figure that--in addition to some meta tags and an age compliance page--should cover all my bases.
