I've been following the instructions on how to install efiction, and every time I've done it (now and in the past) I always get lost or something. I can honestly say I don't get how to install efiction. I don't get Mysql and FTP and all that. I have a host that has Msql and Php as the requirements state, I've uploaded the files and configured what I'm supposed to. I just keep getting a headache.
Are you talking about these instructions? https://efiction.org/wiki/index.php5?title=Installing_3.0
What steps are you getting stuck at?
Yeah. That. It said to enter the /efiction/install.php or whatever, but i keep getting like bad requests and it won't go to the install screen
Are you sure you got the files uploaded to the correct place? Your host will generally have a folder labeled public_html or www. The files get uploaded there.
It wasn't like that before, so I placed it in the HTML folder. I'm redoing the process again. My next question I just realized i had was what exactly am I CHMODing? I got the config part, and I think I get the make a folder for stories part and CHMODing that. Is there anything else I missed?
The installation guide tells you what needs to be CHMODed, and it's also talked about here: https://efiction.org/wiki/index.php5?title=CHMOD
No offense, but telling me to look somewhere isn't really helping. I've read all of them, and it hasn't helped much. One guide says to do one thing, another says to do something else. In one of the guides it gave a list of more things I need to CHMOD, like in the message folder or whatever.
I tried putting it under HTML, I created a stories folder, and moved config to the root of the efiction folder, and I CHMOD them. What am I missing?
No offense back at you, but the two documents I linked you to say the exact same thing about CHMODing. I understand that you're probably frustrated, but saying only "it's not working" makes it very difficult to offer suggestions. I know it's a lot of information, especially if you've never done anything like it before. Just take it one step at a time and when you run into trouble, be as specific as possible.
There are four steps outlined in the installation guide. Maybe make a little list and write notes and check off things you've done. I always have paper by my computer for this reason.
Summary of the four steps for installation:
1) Get webhost - You've done this
2) Set up MySQL database - I don't know if you've done this part
3) Upload files and change indicated permissions
4) Run install file (actually, once you've got all the files uploaded it runs itself when you view your site)
eFiction calls for the following files to be CHMODED
config.php, blocks_config.php, naughtywords.php, formselect.js and the files within the messages folder to be set to
666.
the messages folder to be set to 777 and the files in it to 666.
and the stories folder to 777.
(If you intend to save the story texts to the server and/or if you wish to allow image uploads)
To change these from the defaults on your host, you'll need either an FTP program, or access to your files through the file manager on your host.
Click (file manager) or right click (FTP) on the file and look for something called either "change permissions" or "attributes" then set them accordingly.

3.) That would be the CHMODING, right?
4.) And when I go to my site I get:
What you posted is for installing a previous, now defunct, version of the script. (See that it's in the 2.0 Installation Support board?)
Looks like what I'm seeing is a placeholder template used by your host. It's an index.html file ( http://wdreamor.nexcess.net/index.html). Sometimes hosting accounts have this, sometimes they don't. Delete the index.html file and it should stop taking precedence over eFiction's index.php (which in this case redirects to install/install.php). Or you can put in the URL yourself to get to install, so if anyone happens by while you're running the install they'll see that placeholder. http://wdreamor.nexcess.net/install/install.php. I'm getting a 404 for that, though, so it looks like the file's not there yet, or in the wrong location.
Ah, the problem is that you've got it in a folder called 'efiction' and not in the root. So to view it you'll want to go to http://wdreamor.nexcess.net/efiction
ZOMG! You're brilliant...or I misunderstood what it meant by root. Take your pick! THANKS SO MUCH! =))))))
No problem. I'd suggest moving the contents of the efiction folder to the root (html) folder since you probably want it there. Also, having the folder named 'efiction' has been recommended against because sometimes hackers have been known to look for that. It'd be easier to do that before running the install.
