Ok, this is a topic that has been dealt with before, and yes, it is a simple issue. At least I hope so. However, none of the other threads offered me any insight into why I am receiving this error:

Step 1: ERROR! Could not open config.php for writing.

Ok:
config.php was moved to main folder. (Information entered prior to install script and during)
config.php permissions are 666

Misc:
Uploads folder was created, chmod -R 777
Process was tried with efiction directory at 755/777 (config.php at 666 both attempts)
Entire program was re-uploaded
Database logs in with root, it is a test environment but I'd understand if you set a safeguard against this.

I really do not understand what the problem is with the installation script. Does the process need special administrative permissions, because it shouldn't, I am installing it on a virtual test server. Dos it enter information in step 1 into the database, causing issues if the installation needs to be re-attempted? I'm stumped, all your faq's point to an easy install, and none of the threads dealing with this made it sound like this was a persistent or deal-breaking issue. So why won't it go away? Help?

Also, tried with a browser on the server as well as one remotely, same result.

I can't explain why it isn't working since from what you say it should be, but config.php is really only the database info, so you can edit that manually and then move to the next step in the install process. The URL is like ?step=x (where X is a number), so just change the number to the next, like from 1 to 2, and it should work.

Changing the get/post thing to 2 just gets me a black screen with nothing on it. This actually happens when adding ?step=1 to index.php as well. I am running Fedora, but with a GUI to simplify things for the test environment. Do you think it may be something native to that flavor of Linux? I have a working knowledge of Linux but am by no means an expert.

Edit: Double-checked safe mode, it is off in php.ini, also wrote a htaccess that flags it off, redundant I guess but this really has me stumped.

You have to edit your config.php by hand before moving to step 2 if you want to skip step 1.

All information is written directly into config.php, I also tried it originally with the dynamically created key field auto-generated. I'm gonna try again manually entering one that I will copy from the loaded page.

EDIT! Check that! Got it. I think. Had to generate the key and then copypasta it into the physical file. Man that is weird. But yeah that apparently has fixed it. I really hope nothing else goes wrong, troubleshooting gives me headaches. Thanks guys!

EDIT EDIT! And by guys I mean awesome ladies. efauxpas.
