State the nature of your problem:
Umm, I've played around with eFiction for quite some time, but must be too dumb or sumthing to overcome even the first error I get since months ago. So I tot of giving up, but then why not ask first. The error I get is as below:
A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: SHOW TABLES LIKE 'fanfiction_settings'
Error: (1046) No database selected
At the 1st step, I enter the details of my db as follow:
Since I duno wat table prefix is (am unfamiliar with php / mysql stuff) I leave it blank (since I've read some of the support threads, where members encountering installation prob have left it blank too - worked for them)

Then I came to the page above and clicked on continue...

And, tadaa... the error as always, I think I've run installation 100+ times, each time changing the prefix, and wat not, but its not working... so... Can sumone please tip me? I'm rather slow hehe
And yes, I've read the README.txt, installhelp.htm, and adminmanual.htm... and the related threads here...
Do you have a test account for us? no
p/s: I've reuploaded all the files again, so if u go to the URL, it will be another brand new installation...
Sounds like the problem is your DB settings. It's not connecting to the database you've inputed. What I'd do to troubleshoot and narrow down the issue is this:
1) Check the names of your DB, your DB user name in case you mistyped something and make sure you're using the correct password. I'm assuming you've done this as you're tried a few times.
2) Check to see if you've added the user to the DB [a common step missed] and that you've given it the permissions it needs. . How?
Steps:
- Log into your account
- Navigate to the section that allows you to create databases
- If your setup is similar to my host's, you should have an option to add the user to the DB. Might look something like this:

- Select the DB user, then the DB, then click in the box that says ALL. After that, click Add User.
See if you can't go forward with the install.
Also the prefix you're being asked for...the way the script is set up is that it allows you to have your settings table have a different prefix than the rest of your archive..adds a lil more security among other things. Just put your mouse over the ? beside it for more information. . The prefix can basically be whatever you want to use. Say your archive is for romantic fics..you might just want to use romfic_ as the prefix for your archive and perhaps rfs_ for your settings. Just try to make it something that isn't obvious just from looking at your site.
Try the above out and see if that doesn't solve your problem.

Did you chmod your config file? Sounds like the config file isn't being written.
You might have to plug something into the Settings Table Prefix. I seem to recall I had problems until I put something in that field. I think I used 'main' or 'default' or something like that and the rest of the install went through with no problems.

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)
Now running v.3
I've already fixed eFiction for Rain, but for whatever reason I cannot make heads or tails of this error. It sounds like for whatever reason eFiction was searching for the table 'fanfiction_settings', and displayed this error because it couldn't find it. the obvious reason would be incorrect MySQL settings, but that should give you an error at the first screen, and as someone else suggested, an incorrect CHMOD on the settings file, but that too would give an error. I'm assuming that for whatever reason the MySQL data wasn't being written after the first page, which is what the installation was looking for here.
It might be something like the sitekey not matching in the database tables of fanfiction_settings and fanfiction_stats.

Look at your database and your config file. Check the info listed in them. Something was probably saved wrong during the install.
